Hi Paul,

The aft-mounted sled has been working fine for me. . .When I first got Vaea the sled was held up by a 13mm line cleated to the aft beam. I did not like the security of that, so I mounted a pair of U-bolts to the aft beam, a smaller set of U-bolts to the sled, connected by chain. The original 2-stroke motor was a 20" long shaft (508mm), and it would occasionally overrev in choppy wind against tide conditions, causing me to have to keep a hand on the throttle. The current motor is a 4-stroke Nissan Sail Pro 6hp 25" extra-long shaft (635mm) that is working great: I would go with an extra-long shaft . The prop should be at or near the deepest portion of the keel for best efficiency.

I had given thought to the other common mounting location, the aft cockpit area, but decided against it due to the greater maneuverability of the sled position . I have to back out of my slip, with the tillers hard over to port, and the rearward position of the motor really helps. I steer the motor as well, pointed hard over as the tillers, and this lets me make this sharp turn. Other tiki sailors mentioned the loss of such maneuverability the further forward the motor was mounted.

(for some reason, I cannot reply to personal messages on Ning. . .)

well today i glued a strip of hardwood to the keel and put pressure on it by wedging scrap lengths of timber to the lean to roof, which did the trick nicely.drilled out the holes in the ss strip,i shall glass over the timber with bi axial tape in the morn.

the sanding has come to an end and now i am going to undercoat the hull .

the cabin sides and roof are all glassed now.man did i have a problem withe the main hatch fitting.the hardwood timber blocks i used to slide along the ss guide have both cracked and will have to use another brand of timber for this.

i collected the hoop pine for the beams today.overall it looks good and pretty knot free stuff,it is so sad that decent timber is so hard to get nowadays and if you do it sure does costs a pretty penny.it seems the only timber that is grown today is for pulping.
