Thank's Kim. I think an aluminum tube is the best solution.
At Kims age one needs all the help one can get raising ones mast, his helpers are purple in color;)
Andre,
Will take some photos to show you. I'm using a 6:1 purchase from the mast head (mainsheet) and the gin pole is attached at the pivot point of the mast & tabernacle. At the moment the temporary set up uses a gin pole about 1.5 metres the final set up will be running more like 2.4 - 3 metres.
Thanks Lee. I have to find a suitable aluminum pole and I was thinking that about 3 meters is a good lenght. I don't know the thickness of the wall and the diameter of the tube but I suppose one can feel if it is strong enough. I am very interesting in the fotos so I can see how it is the connection.
Andrés, I used a section of the pipe left over from my aft netting beam. The outer diameter is 2 1/4", the wall section is 1/4". This is very strong: I could sit in the middle of this beam before I put the solar panel on it.
The pole I use for raising the mast on Zest is about 2" OD, I guess about 1/16" wall thickness. If you use it right it's only loaded in pure compression so it can be pretty light. I think ours is an old bit of spinnaker pole. One suggestion I'd make is to be sure you set up a pair of guy ropes to the top of the mast, as well as a pair to the top of the pole. The mast ones are important to stop it swinging around if you get a puff of breeze when it's half way up. If it does swing you can damage the mast foot. We use the forward pair of shrouds made off onto the beam cleats to keep it steady until the aft ones take up.
Ditto what Robert said: I used the forward shrouds to the mast beam cleats.
Thanks Kim and Robert, very clear!
This give some idea as to the connection the gypsy pole has its a piece of mast section cut past half way so its a snug clip fit, you could lay up a fibreglass one for timber masts. As you can see the tabernacle is VERY substantial so I don't worry about stays when raising or lowering its rock solid!
The Gypsy pole will end up being 2.5-3 metres long and double as a boom tent ridge beam and "spinaker" pole thingo with the inside of the mast clip being lined with something nice and slick.
Hope this helps.
:-)
