Softwood vs Hardwood for timber

Hello.

My son and I are planning on building a Tiki 21 this summer.

The study plans for the boat call for soft wood lumber.

"Timber: Use a fine grained softwood (white or red pine, spruce, Columbian Pine

etc.),selecting wood for grain and ‘no knots’. A light weight hardwood, such as a light

mahogany (also called gaboon or occume) can be used."

But we have a friend who just sent us this message:

"I have 1000 board feet of white oak logs sitting in my…

Tiki 26 Trailer Build

The Tiki trailer with swing out cradles is well under construction. I've made some structural improvements including additional crossmembers and attaching the A frame and drawbar to the underneath per Aus/NZ trailer standards. Ive also added longitudinal drawbar stiffeners to reduce flex. With all material being 5mm steel I think it's a bit of an overkill but considering it could theoretically take a T30 then I'm glad it's extra strong. Suspension is all rated to 1500kg and has disc brakes…

Tiki 21 topsail

Hi,

An assymetric orcsymetric spinaker is nice on a small Tiki, but did some of you try a topsail? According to the gaff rig, it may be possible. Any idea around?

Cheers,

Éric

Forestay Bridle.

Hello. Well I hit an immovable object with my tiki30 the other day. It did rip the port side forestay Ubolt right out of the bow stem. While inspecting the damage I noticed the wood was damp inside. Not really rotten but not a good thing. Repair s are underway and I chopped out damp wood and fitted a new stem piece all epoxied back in no big deal. I never hav liked the though bolted Ubolt Idea to connect the forestay to the stem. I’m considering drilling some proper holes and using a…

unfinished tiki 38 project ? allergy to epoxy

Hello wharram builders and friends!

Me and my partner Ondra started building our tiki 38 last year in january. We have most of the starboard hull finished now, but we had to stop building about a month ago due to Ondras health problems.

From the start of the build, Ondra has been having some respiratory problems and skin rashes. Recently, things got quite serious (he was basicaly choking every night), so after visiting a doctor, who made some tests, he was diagnosed with…

Swim ladder on smaller Wharrams / getting dogs and people onboard

What are others doing to make it easy to get dogs (and people) on board when not beside a dock?  Getting our 60 pound dog off and on the boat during a camping trip is a particular concern. On the Mana the mizzen mast on the aft crossbeam and the mizzen sail and its lines aft of that create a lot of "busy-ness" in that area. Any suggestions out there? photos of swim ladder arrangements on Tiki 21s? Other options?

Executive Summary

Following the 1950 and 1996 water shortage in Texas, it was necessary to institute programs through organizations that would to be active in the instituting measures to conserve water. The move would be taken by considering key statistics so that information about the water scarcity and need is used to determine the adversely affected areas in Texas. The result was the formation of the Regional Water Planning Groups (RWPG) that would serve to provide an orderly management in preparation for…

Sad passing of Akhona, co-builder of Luckyfish

Today with sadness I post this tribute from Dan Hardwicke in South Africa, the builder of Luckyfish, to his co-worker Akhona Bayana, who has sadly passed away. He fought a lifelong battle with illness finally succumbing to TB. Reading this, one can see Dan was surrogate family for Akhona and so to Dan I extend our sympathies for losing a loved one. Akhona's spirit will live on in the travels of Luckyfish and we will happily carry out Dan's wishes to commemorate Akhona with an…
