I'm installing some through deck fittings for vhf cables. Is 3M 5200 adequate for sealing the hole and screws in the plywood, or should it ideally be all coated with epoxy first?

Hi Roger,

I epoxied the large hole edge, and then used these Blue Sea cable clams:

This lets you remove the cable fittings easily when the mast needs to come down.

Thanks Kim!

All plywood endgrain should be coated with epoxy, minimum. Ideally, one would bore the hole twice the size required and fill the hole with thickened epoxy, then drill a hole through the middle of the cured epoxy.

3M 5200 is a bonding agent, and should never be used on any item that you may one day want (or need) to remove. In over 25 years of boats, boat building, and cruising, I have never found a use for 5200 except to permanently bond a hull-to-deck joint. Bedding compound (i.e.: Dolphinite) should be used in most instances, and high quality silicone for anything not supported by using a bedding compound.

Thanks Budget Boater.

5200 IMO is very good for any sealing task where adhesive strength is desired.
