Wharram Builders and Friends

A Photo & Discussion Forum for Wharram Design Enthusiasts

I just love multi hulls.  For me Wharrams are the most logical, they just focus more on what's important then only performance. That's the inspiration I got here and that's what made me do this.....

Crystal Clear is still on her journey to perfection, but she got this far thanks to many people that share what they know, do, think, and believe...

The next video is our input... enjoy.

Thanks bro, seen so many gallons go under the bridge....

Now, just hope in the next stages I'll be counting liters....

Keep on at it Rael…… there is more to learn on this shunter canoe line of development, and which might eventually lead you closer to a plywood V or classic Wharram section double canoe, in the same way that it has done for me.

Yep, it has taken me more than 40 years to synthesize the traditional Polynesian Pahi with  Wharram like V section plywood hull.

Starting out on the quest for Pacific sailing canoe knowledge, I read what Eric De Bisschop wrote about Polynesian double canoes,at the same time as reading ‘two girls and two catamarans’.

In summary there is the catamaran configuration, and then there is the shunter double canoe, as  suggested by de Bisschop.

While Wharram has gone with the catamaran option ,  the shunter canoe or proa, has been left for others to work out.

James Wharam explained(in his fist book) how he progressed from the box section hull (Tangaroa) to his V section hull.

This change in basic hull form is mentioned as an echo of the Polynesian change from a Tahitian dugout Va’a to the built up V section Pahi. Except that the original Polynesian Pahi hull is a more complex cordate section, rather than a simple V shape.

I could post pics of the complex Pahi that I am working on,and maybe also show the plywood V section double canoe that is based on the Tuamotus model Pahi held in the Bernice P Bishop museum in Hawaii. But this message is long enough already is, so I should rather follow up here later

Thanks Jeremy, I am experimenting with all hull shapes, "Crystal Clear" has a V bottom with a lot of rocker, her hulls are perfect for choppy seas. "Why Not?" with no rocker on a flat bottom is fast, now I am turning him into a micro cruiser for short trips, I wonder if he will be o.k. in moderate waves since he's narrow and once loaded his bottom will be fully submerged, That should eliminate pounding.... so "why not?"........

If I'm not happy, I can always add rocker and dead rise later on, creating a V bottom and adding volume.

Yes, I would like to see any Photos on the subject.

Rael.

Wow! Quite a bit of thinking and smart solutions went into this boat. I will have to watch that video at least five times more to get all the details.

Nice to be reminded of our time in Tsarevo as well.

Keep it up!

I looked at your Photos, nice trip with your Tiki 21.

looking at the root you sailed, I too enjoyed the memories of sailing to Tsarevo. from Korfu Greece, we took the exact same root.... How I miss those days......

Then at the end of summer 2010, after sailing from the Atlantic, France to Greece, in Athens waiting for a train, my bag got stolen, camera inside................ Memory card? inside camera....... Back up? nothing!!! zero. Shaize.....

Bottom line, your photo album, sent me back to a trip that only other people can remind me of.....

Your album isn't the first, to do this to me.... I think I'm beginning to enjoy it.......

Thanks for the comment, I enjoyed your album. Keep Sailing.......

All d best.
