Can the Tangaroa Mk 4 use tiller steering instead of wheel steering? I haven't seen pics of a Tangaroa with tiller steering only wheel steering driving the tillers.

Just wondering if it would be practical to use tiller steering with the size and deck layout of a Tangaroa or if the helmsman would have to be too far aft to be practical?

Cheers, Allen

You would need to sit somewhere near the tiller bar. Practicality is up to the person doing the steering, at sea, in weather, at night, during a storm.

After looking at the drawings more it looks like even if the rear area had a slatted deck instead of netting, it would probably less than ideal getting to and from the tiller steering seat.

I did see a pic of an Oro in Sea People where they made a 'cockpit' with sunken floor in the aft storage area, where the hatch usually is. Of course the Oro is a good bit bigger than a Tangaroa.

The steering wheel and associated pulleys and ropes wouldn't really add that much complexity over tiller steering.
