Wharram Builders and Friends

A Photo & Discussion Forum for Wharram Design Enthusiasts

Last year we purchased our Tiki 38 Catknapp which has had her twin engine pods replace with a single central engine and the pods turned into fuel tanks. This has really changed this space on the boat:

What I'm thinking about doing is returned to the original design, We dont have the plans and even with the Wharram discount getting them is $1500NZD, I'd like to know before hand how much time and money may be invovled, Is anyone able to share how long this central area would take to build and an rough idea on materials needed? If it's manageable I'll go ahead and buy the plans, Just want to avoid finding out it's something crazy like 700 hours build

This area really only consists of three main components:

• Main Boxes

• Engine drop wells

• Slatted deck (with or without the fire box)

It is going to take about 4-5 sheets of plywood and some Douglass Fir lumber (plus glue and such.) How long it takes to build depends on your skill level, and tools at your disposal, but I think 30 hours would be about right with all finish work involved, but does not include the time to fit the engines, wiring, and controls.

to build the center deck , two engine boxes and sleds with glass and paint in 30 hours would be pretty fast. i couldn't do it that quick

You are right. I forget that I have a CNC that makes all of the precise cuts for me in a fraction of time, and makes assembly much faster. So it is probably more like 45-50 hours for the average guy with hand power tools. Of course if you are using high end paint, and intend to smooth and fair everything properly for said paint, it will take even longer.
