Roller reefing for small cats

I thought I'd share some experience of setting up my Hitia 17 “Lilla My” with a roller reefing jib in case it is useful to others. I have certainly found it worked well for me over a summer of camp…Continue

Hitia 17 to visit in the UK

I'm considering building a Hitia 17 but keen to see and ideally have a sail in one before committing to the project.  Anyone out there who would you be up for showing off their boat / sharing their…Continue

"Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. I got quite a few ideas from previous builders, so it's nice to pass these on and add in a few tweaks of my own.  Cheers, Dan"

I am:
A home builder, I own a Wharram
What boat (s) are you building or do you own?
Hitia 17 "Lilla My" built 2014
Chesapeake 17LT sea kayak built 2010
Country, City, and State?
UK, Mid Wales
About me or us?
I built my Hitia 17 while living in Machynlleth, mid Wales, which made the most local small boat sailing the Dyfi Estuary - beautiful landscape, big tides and lots of sandbanks and shallow water.
I now live in Leeds, England, too far from the sea for comfort!
Looking to?
I built a Hitia 17 for some camp cruising in the Baltic summer 2014 and fun around home after.

Good luck with your project! I'm based in Finland - if your Baltic cruise gets this far (highly recommended!) then welcome to visit us and Godzilla, our Pahi 42.

If you're planning to trail-sail, Hitia 17 is probably a good bet - Tiki 21 is great, but that much bigger that you'll need a stronger tow car + it'll cost more on ferries. I do have Hitia 17 plans (I was planning to build one when I first came to Finland) and I think Hanneke said it could just about be car-topped....! I think for 2 adults it would be fine for camping.

Finnish archipeligo and Finnish lake district are both fantastic for sailing - we of course stick to the more open sea areas. But summer is very hot and almost 24 hours daylight, what more do you want?!

Good luck and hope to see you over here one day!

Hi Dan,

I saw that you have an Outboard on your Hita 17. I plan to fix an Outboard on my Hitia 17, but still not shure where and how. Can you please sent / Post some Photos how you solved the Problem. I have a 6HP Outboarder was the same like the 5HP.

Thanks and Greetings Oli

Hi Dan,

Indeed, for example I brazenly copied the design of your floors, that a great idea cheaper and more comfortable than the original mesh. And retrospectively inverting the desckstringers inside would have spare me a lot of time glassing, fairing and painting, for a more robust result.

By the way, I visited with family Wales a couple of years ago, I remembered wandering around Borth and Dyfi and by chance in a boatyard close to the estuary I saw a impressive classic Wharram (a Narai?). First and only time I have observed such a large unit. It made my day! Tough all the journey in Wales was a pleasure.
