Looking for help renovating a Pahi 42 (Azores, Portugal)

I realized over this summer that the project boat that I purchased at the end of 2024 will take me a few more years to complete at my current speed and time availability, which is not really what I naively expected when buying it.

The Pahi 42 is not generally in bad shape and is in the water at the marina in Ponta Delgada, but there are a lot of small time consuming works necessary and there are very few professional services here to help out (aside from the fact that I don't really have the money to pay for them). 

So basically I am looking for volunteers willing to help me renovate the boat; relatively basic works like painting and so on. I think I have enough experience by now to show people how to do it, so someone interested in learning how to renovate or build a wharram would be welcome.

It is possible to live on the boat or at a guest room in my apartment, and generally speaking the Azores are a nice holiday location (for nature lovers and people looking to relax or surf), so that would be the compensation of sorts.

If someone is super motivated and puts in a lot of work I might also be willing to sell the boat to them at a discounted price, but that isn't my preferred option. Ideally I would find someone interested in sharing the boat in the longer term, as frankly speaking it is too big for me alone and I am also not a very experienced sailor.

I do not know, if you are  my friend. Ok, I'm joking, but you catched the Pahi just before me. I already had booked the flights to Punta Delgada. Three days before my flight I got the message, that the boat was sold. It was close.😉

Now reading about your struggle to renovate the boat I am now just curious about the  status and your progress of the work. Did you got support?

Hmm, the previous owner never told me that. She only mentioned someone else backing out shortly before me.

Sadly none of the three people that contacted me ended up coming for various reasons, but I made some progress myself this summer, so I am somewhat more optimistic these days than I was when writing the original post. But the boat is still not ready to go on tour... maybe next year.

Did you end up buying another boat or what is your current status? I would be willing to do some boat sharing arragement if the boat stays here on the Azores.

I'm happy to hear, that you are making progress, despite not getting other help.
A sharing arrangement would not work with us, as we are living on the boat. At the moment we have a 'half boat' .That means a grp Monohull.
This summer a lot changed for us and we are seriously looking for a Wharram again. Some years ago we were cruising with a Tangaroa. It was really fun, but nowadays we need it a bit bigger. 😉
We hope to visit the Azores again. We were there only ones and only for a few days. We were comming back from the Caribbean back to Europe. The next time we want to spent much more time exploring the islands.

Ok I understand. Well, if you come to Sao Miguel another time, let me know and I am happy to show you the Wharram and maybe some other nice parts of the island. And while I am not really planning to sell the cat right now, we can always discuss it after you had a closer look at it.

I am currently outfitting the boat with electric outboard engines and a much improved solar system, so if that is something that would interest you I am also happy to share the details.

Your electric outboarders are really something I am interested in. On our Tangaroa we had two normal 9.9hp outboarders and they were a nightmare.
My dream setup would be electric propulsion, for short time just through the batteries (charged by solar), and for long distances by engine charged with a diesel generator.
How is.your set up?

Yeah, currently I still have the two 9.9hp Yamaha four stroke engines, but they are 20+ years old and not very reliable anymore despite several attempts to fix them. So yeah, electric seems the way forward especially with Wharrams.

I am still in the process of setting everything up, but it will likely be two 4kW electric outboards (about 8hp each) and I am currently installing four 5.2kWh LiFePO4 batteries (48V) for them. I also have a small petrol generator of 2kW for emergency recharging. The entire front deck will be covered with eight walkable solar panels with together approx. 1000Wp.

👍 How much is the weight of these batteries? And with front deck you mean the decks of the hulls? Not the platform in the middle, right?

And where dobl you store the batteries?

The batteries are 180kg together (but are also replacing approx. 120kg old lead acid batteries). The batteries are in the cockpit. One in each corner, almost like the cockpit design was made for them.

No the platform between the hulls in front of the mast. There are these eight lids for the storage containers and on each I am planning to put a walkable solar panel. The side hulls are still free.
