Side hull window thickness?

The side windows on my Pahi 42 are not in the best shape... I guess no need for immediate replacement, but sooner or later it will be necessary. They appear to have been made from 10mm (cast?) acrylic…Continue

Sliding hatches repair?

My Pahi 42 comes with three sliding hatches for the deck pod and the two hulls. I like the design in general as it is easy to open by foot and strong enough to step on as well. But after what I assume…Continue

Robert Hughes replied to Kris's discussion Wheeled trolleys for hulls?
"Most of the flotation came from the tyres, but after they got too old and perished I replaced them with solid rubber ones. Wood was plenty strong enough for mine, but with the bigger boat maybe metal would be better. I agree four trolleys probably…"

"Thanks, I found your pictures. Looks fancy ;) You mentioned in your post that it ended up too light and floaty so that you had to add weights. If you were to construct something like that again, would you use a metal frame at the bottom instead? I…"

Wheeled trolleys for hulls?

Has anyone here build something similar to these wheeled trolleys visible here:https://youtu.be/uDQdjGbE7Iw?feature=shared&t=367I actually need to build something quite similar to pull my Pahi 42 out of the water at a gently sloped ramp as it is too wide for the normal boat lifts here.Hints how to build it appreciated.See More

Monika Matis replied to Kris's discussion supplementary beams: which material?
"Hi, it might be of interest to you that on Tiki 38 - similar size and weight Wharram - the rear “netting” beam is specified as 140mm diameter aluminium or wooden beam - and it is not a construction beam. pretty much the same size as…"

Kris replied to Kris's discussion Epoxy filler for fillets and bonds, only micro glass beads or also chopped glass fiber?
"So, after using the stuff a bit: the 409 works great at a filler for repairs, but to prevent it from dripping on non horizontal area you need to add a lot which results it in being quite weak in the end. Good for non-structural things, but not…"

Kris replied to Kris's discussion supplementary beams: which material?
"Yeah, this is how the beams are build in my pahi42 too. I realized now that there was an update to the building plans, and I looked at the old ones. But I think the old method is still used for the lighter front beam and is probably sufficient for…"

Lovako replied to Kris's discussion supplementary beams: which material?
"I built my Pahi 42 beams as per plans (I-bean style) - used x3  18mm marineply centre pieces laminated with Resorcenol and x3 top and bottoms hardwood (Balou) planks strengthed with triangle hard Merantie pieces between top/bottom and centre…"

Kris replied to Kris's discussion supplementary beams: which material?
"So I checked again in the original building plans, and apparently the original Pahi 42 plans also laminate planks (18mm, up to 10 layers) of softwood for the main beams. Somehow the Pahi 42 I have didn't follow the original plans in that regard…"

Kris replied to Kris's discussion supplementary beams: which material?
"This is also what I gathered from further web-searches. What about epoxy-glueing some regular wood plank together? Like for example 15mm ones in 4-5 layers? I assume the epoxy would penetrate quite deeply into the wood that way and thus hidden rot…"

Robert Hughes replied to Kris's discussion supplementary beams: which material?
"In a long solid beam, plywood has half the strength of solid timber.  This is because 50% of the plies are running across or through the beam, not along it, and contribute almost no longitudinal stiffness.  Box or I-beams are a different…"

supplementary beams: which material?

I need some 3,40m or so supplenentary beams to construct a frame for a bathing ladder and are wondering what people here usually preferr in regards to materials.I have seen all sorts of materials being used, from aluminium bars to laminated plywood strips. On a similar construction that I have seen they used hardwood, but in that length and thinkness it is a bit hard to come by here and also expensive. Let alone transport issues at that length.Fiberglassing regular wood beams seems to be…See More

"OK, I've tried to put a few images of our front "netting" (actually webbing straps sewn together) and our central walkway - maybe this is what you are talking about? The first two photos are from 2019, the last from 2023. We now have…"

Kris replied to Kris's discussion Side hull window thickness?
"This design pressure is a bit mysterious. According to this website, a design pressure of 50 psf should be able to withstand a category 5 hurricane. But 50 psf is just 2.4 kN/m² not 70, like the formula uses."
