Wharram Builders and Friends

A Photo & Discussion Forum for Wharram Design Enthusiasts

It is hard to get the camera and computer working together and hard to make myself write these words because I do not want to succeed at this.  I do not want Peace IV to go away from our lives.  But I know she wants and needs a younger couple now and she is ready and eager to get back to her ocean sailing that she does so well.

We have had inquiries from Norway, Spain, Costa Rica, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, and some folks here in America as well.  This is just the folks who have contacted us from this website.  We also have a broker who is working independently and from time to time we can see  that he has shown the boat while we were  away.  Eventually either he or we will succeed and then Nev and I will have to say a tearful good bye to the boat we built.

My friend took some pics of Peace so I will get help to put them up here.  I am thinking of posting them one by one with a little story with each one remembering our lives on the ocean.  There are also some pics on our web page here at Wharram Builders and Friends.  I have written extensively re our build, sailing, and living aboard.  The boat is in good shape but needs a fresh coat of paint.  That is all.

Contact us through this website if you are interested in buying Peace.

All the best,  Ann and Nev

When you make a post, such as this one, just above where you are typing the text are a series of icons. The first one says LINK. Just to the right of that is what looks like a little picture frame, and to the right of that is one that looks like a piece of film. If you put your cursor over any of the boxes, it will tell you what they are or what they do. The second little box that looks like a picture frame is for inserting images/photos into a post.

When you click on it, a new little window will pop up, which allows you to add images to the post. If the pictures you took are stored on your computer, then click the little "BROWSE" button and find the folder that has the image(s) in it. Click on the one you want and click "OPEN" or whatever your computer shows. It can take anywhere from seconds to many minutes per image depending on the size of the image and bandwidth of your connection. Once the image is uploaded, click the "OK" button at the bottom of the little pop up window. The image will be inserted into your post. You can do this as many times as you wish (up to 100 per day.)

Either above or below your image(s) in the post, you can continue to type out any descriptions you wish. Best of luck (or not) with your sale.

Thanks Budget Boater.  We have been on holiday and are now home and I will begin to get organized now with pics and maybe stories to go with them re Peace.

My friend Gil and i are attempting to add some pictures of Peace that our other friend, Theresa, took of Peace IV last month.  I really do not know what I would do without my good friends in this digital world!  Let's hope these pics can be posted in an album on my page.  I have removed the pics of our old experimental gaff pack and now you can see the new sail cover -gaff pack from Hodges Street Sail Repair.   Ann and friends!

When we were building, we considered several options for the engines including an engine on deck with long shaft, engines in the hulls, and the outboards we ended up installing according to the plans.  First we installed the two 9.9 Yamahas as suggested by Wharrams and they worked ok for several years, but when it came time to re engine, we chose 20hp Yamahas and that seemed about perfect. Sometimes we used one engine, other times both.  We had plenty of power and the boat was responsive even in strong wind in close quarters when entering harbor looking for an anchor spot.

But the best thing about the outboards was that time when we were motoring through the bridge in Ft Pierce, Florida a few days after a hurricane.  There was a lot of stuff in the water and I was keeping careful watch at the helm while Nev made some snacks for us down in the galley.  I never saw what we hit with the port side engine so I suspect it was something that was just under the surface.  But it made an almighty BANG!

Next thing Nev came flying outa the galley about the time I turned that port side engine off and he had the engine lid lifted and the engine raised in no time at all.  Upon inspection he made some reassuring noises and asked how far to the next place we could anchor.  Well, we had anchored in good holding two miles from there, so that was where we went and got that big 80 pound Monson Supreme settled into the sand and backed on it with the starboard engine with no trouble at all.  Nev suggested I go make lunch and he would have the engine fixed by the time I got sandwiches made.

The propeller had been damaged when we hit whatever it was floating below the surface, so Nev simply replaced the prop and had me use the cell phone to call Gene Perry down in Peck Lake and he made arrangements to have a replacement prop plus repairs tor the damaged one.

But the main thing was, it was all repaired by us, nobody had to go swimming to inspect or repair the problem, the boat did not need to be hauled, and it was inexpensive too.  We were so glad to have outboards that day!

I guess the engine that a person wants for their boat is something personal and maybe you can make a case for all kinds of engine solutions including no engine at all.  But we liked what we had on Peace IV and I would do it that way again.  Twin 20 hp Yamahas and Nev kept them in good order with regular maintenance.

Hiya folks I am shopping for a Tiki 46, I'm new here and can't seam to find any links to your vessels details - pics etc...?

Is she listed anywhere else ?

cheers,

Marti

Hi Marti,

There is info on our page here so you can click on our picture or email us at svpeacefour@yahoo.com. There are over 100 photos and I have written many comments and discussions.  There is also info on the James Wharram Designs website.  But you can phone us at 401 261 7816 or email us at svpeacefour@yahoo.com.  Best of all, come see the boat! Our local airport is close enough for me to come pick you up at the airport and bring you to the boat myself.  The Coastal Carolina Regional Airport is located in New Bern and we live in Oriental, North Carolina.  Peace is docked only 10 miles from our house.

Hi Anne and Nev, sorry for my late reply as we have had a busy silly season here in Australia and our net has been down for a month or so. I'm not in a position to purchase just yet but your Tiki 46 is the finest I've seen yet !

I've had the design book or over 15 years and I'm checking out my options for acquiring a good vessel for family and renegade charters for the coming years ahead.

Thanks again,

Marti
