TIKI 26 - ROTTEN TILLER. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN THIS CASE?

Hi everyone, my Tiki 26 has a cracked, rotten tiller.  I've reinforced it temporarily, to get me home (see photos).  I guess water got in through the bolt-hole.  (I loosened the bolt for the photos;…Continue

"I've sailed my 21 for 2 & 1/2 seasons and love it. I could spend weeks on her and would have no problems, but I like camping and am used to the inconvenience. Getting the family on board is different. The toilet (lack of) is an issue, so it…"

"Hi Ian, thanks for your comment. You're right about the similarities between the 21 and the 26; though as a (summer) live-aboard, my boat has been brilliant.  Being able to sit up in the 26 makes for better comfort in any kind of bad…"

Ian Bamsey replied to Chris Boxer's discussion Tiki 26 for sale - UK south coast
"I'm interested in why you want to trade up to the 30. I have a 21, and feel that going up to a 26 wouldn't be worthwhile as it's a scaled up 21. i.e. no toilet, similar amount of sleeping etc., while the 30 would be different…"

"This is dreadful news. I've admired Pete Hill's sailing voyages for many years.  And Carly's Oryx blog is very interesting to read.  Pete and Carly's family must be going through an unimaginably difficult time."

"Postscript - Chris I am wondering why this split. Is the cross bar free to the limit of it's travel or does it "bind" ie. come up hard against the tiller ? This will put unfair pressure on the joint. If so the bolt hole may be…"

Galway Bay replied to Chris Boxer's discussion TIKI 26 - ROTTEN TILLER. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN THIS CASE?
"Chris I don't see any rot in the photo more just a split along the grain . Glue and wrap in glass cloth is good advice - and wrap the other one too to be safe. Wharram used to recommend through bolting laminated tillers against splitting. A…"

Chris Boxer replied to Chris Boxer's discussion TIKI 26 - ROTTEN TILLER. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN THIS CASE?
"Perfect, thanks Kim.  That's really helpful.   Just one further clarification: when you "splice", should you cut back the old wood diagonally, or straight across, at 90 degrees?"

kim whitmyre replied to Chris Boxer's discussion TIKI 26 - ROTTEN TILLER. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN THIS CASE?
"Chris, is it actually rotten or did it just split along the grain? If just split along the grain, get some West System 610 and inject it completely into the split. Don't clamp it too hard or you will squeeze the epoxy out! If it is rotten, cut…"
