If the motor is mounted aft of the cockpit it can be steered which makes the boat more manuerable. The prop will come out of the water more often. You can also build a box/table over the motor when mounted in the cockpit. This will reduce noise and possibly theft.

Hi Paul,

In tight quarters, without line handlers to ease your way, the ability to point the prop in the direction you wish to go is very handy. I still steer using the tiller bar, but being able to point the prop to pull or push the boat really helps. My original motor was a 20"/51cm long shaft, and in wind against tide chop, I kept my hand on the throttle to prevent over revving when the prop cleared water. I currently have a 25"/63.5cm extra long shaft and haven't had this problem yet; the motor's electronics will allegedly not allow the motor to over rev. Nissan SailPro 6hp. This motor is a 4-stroke and is so much quieter than the old 2-stroke, I can actually have a conversation without shouting, even while sitting aft.

Only real issue I have is with the raising and lowering of the motor: the lever is below the power head, and is a long reach in a bumpy chop! I plan to alleviate this by extending the lever so I don't have to reach so far.

I have this lock on the motor:

to discourage it from wandering. . .

Thank you fellas for your replies i think for singlehanding the cockpit mount will be the go.
