Ive just bought a tangaroa mk4 in need of a refit. All the steel on her is rusted out, including the cross beam brackets. Can any body share any wisdom on whether its easy to extend existing beams to allow lashing,or if replacing the brackets how would one line up bracket holes with existing holes in the boat? And if they didnt, would you fill them to re drill with epoxy or hard wood dowel,or both..Or what?! Any ideas gratefully accepted.

paul make sure you keep a close eye on your hoop pine componants and flood them with a suitable timber preservative .. hoop pine has excellent engineering properties but is only a durability 4 timber  and in the wrong application or in an area where fresh water can reach and saturate the timber fibers rot is rapid and severe having had 20 odd years in the timber industry I have had much experience with this timber. excellent for spars  but areas where fasteners break any surface protection are particularly vunerable to dry rot

Thanks gents,I'm running with replacing the brackets at this stage, and fingers crossed the rot in the beams doesn't run too far,but if so I'll just build another.

Steve you are spot on.

Galway bay has given a wise suggestion. Replace or fix the old brackets if they need to and forget about lashing, rebuild,  polish and so on, which will drag you into never-ending work. If this is your first boat you'll be horrified at the mega time and money that this things can take off you. Are you sure the brackets are to be replaced? A bit of rust doesn't make steel any weaker. Rot on timber is your concern and priority as the structural integrity is directly dependent to it. That bit of rot in the beams that you mention, has to be investigated closely. If you aren't sure of what to do ask someone that does, you might find that the beams are still ok and all they need is a good coat of the right paint.

Omar M R: New products are a bet I wouldn't take. Epoxy resin is excellent and proven over the years. Some timber do not glue well, just use the one that do.
