A Photo & Discussion Forum for Wharram Design Enthusiasts
Hi,
I am hoping to add a sail to the wardrobe for my tiki 38 to help in light wind conditions.
At present, with a standard setup and an overbuilt boat, performance suffers in under 10 knots of wind.
I looks like the stays would interfere with a genoa or larger foresail so the sail would be mainly for downwind sailing, however being able to use a larger sail with wind on the beam would be great.
Does anyone know of a design that would suit my requirements or that has worked for them?
Cheers
Dave

Get a cruising spinnaker with a sock. I used one on every boat I have every owned to great success (mostly singlehanded) and was able to point above 90 with it.
We did exactly the same thing and sailed a long distance transatlantic with the cruising chute and the windvane and it works perfect. Rolly Tasker sells the cruising chute with the sock for very reasonable price.
I have sailed ketches and yawls before and a mizzen staysail was wonderful for reaching. It takes a bit of fiddling to get it right but for long distance sailing that is not an issue. Usually you can find them in good condition used because they are seldom used for coastal sailing, which most people do.
Try Bacons sails for used ones
Yeah, this makes sense. I noticed sailing to windward, you'd want the helm to bear off slightly. That way the rudder is helping to windward, just like a Hobie cat. But downwind, the main wants to drive the boat around toward the wind. Better to drop the main and put up a downwind sail. I can move 500 ft forward, maybe that will work.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone, the best sailing time of the year.
Thanks everyone for your advice- looks like the cruising spinnaker with sock will be good.
In your experience where is the best place to fly the spinnaker?
What is the best way to run the sheets?
Does anyone have any photos of their rigs?
Cheers

Thank you all for your replies. I have ordered a flat cut tri-radial cruising chute with snuffer from Jeckylls. Their service has been excellent, taking the time to reply to my long winded emails and explain the merits of different spinnaker designs and rigging options.
I will let you know how things go once the sail arrives and we are back in the water.

Sorry, that I have to say, that my experience with Jeckylls are not so good. I ordered a main (wingsail). As I puttet the gaff in, a the gaff-pocket ripped, because it was to tied. And after a few sailing tripps, the zipper was destroyed, because it was made from plastik. I wrote that to Jeckylls but never got a feedback. So I had my sail repaired here in Germany and lost a lot of money.
