I do not really like the proposed soft hatch covers according to the plans. And all Hitia 17 pictures I saw seem to have solid ones. Would be interested in building hints. For example how thick has the plywood to be? Is 4 mm enough if backed with reinforcements? How do you attach them to the hulls? Any comments on how waterproof you can get them?

Thanks,

Martin

Receivd my Hitia 17 plans a couple of weeks back.  Redesigning the hatch covers is on my list of things to do, but I haven't given it much thought yet.

Still working through some other issues, since this particular boat appears to be over engineered.  I realize that was intentional on the part of JWD, since the boat is expected to be built by amatuers with questionable materials and skills.  For example, my quick computations indicate that if I construct the mast using a birdsmouth construction and clear douglas fir, I can probably cut the weight in half without sacrificing any strength.  I'm also tempted to take another look at the size of the epoxy fillets in the hull, since once the strength of the fillet exceeds the material being joined, any additional epoxy is simply added weight.  Not too thrilled with the method given to glass over the keel either.

I'm not entirely going off the reservation.  What I can't figure out on my own, I've got a 4th generation wooden boat builder to consult with, and if necessary, access to a naval architect.

Thanks, Rogerio. I found this site before. It seems to be really well documented but unfortunately I do not understand everything. I only started to learn a bit Portugese...

Omar, I let you know if I find a solution. Looks I will have to tackle this topic first...

Do like me use google traslate...my english is too poor, but google save me. kkk
Hola, Rogerio!
