I'm preparing to install the chain plates for my tiki 30 there are two shrouds -- they're 18 inches apart and both make on to the mast at pretty much the same point at the masthead--it's probably a silly thought but why do I need two when one would do? Why does that sound so familiar?

One pair are backstays, the other pair are shrouds.

That's not much of a back stay

I guess it is a matter of opinion...that, or the difference between shroud and backstay for a swept mast is minimal. Take your pick.
