wheel steering

In the plans of Tiki 31 it is suggested that the steering would be arranged with a "whipstaff" or a sort of  tiller bar replica, connected to tiller bars with system of cables. I wanted to use a…Continue

Up and down movement of the rudders
11 Replies

The Tiki rudders are supposed to be hinged with 4 millimeter polyester string. Have you been able to tie the string in the figure-of-eight fashion so tight, that the rudders do not move up and down.…Continue

"There are a variety of ways to suspend the netting, using rigid tube of different kinds, ropes and so on. While I have not yet made mine, I think that a net lashed at multiple points will give a more stable platform. I have been on a Tiki with a…"

Trampoline for Tiki31

In the plans of Tiki 31 the trampoline is made with a rope going round the netting. The leading edge of the webbing is suspended on three points: in the middle to the forestay and the corners of the webbing to the holes drilled in the top parts of the stemposts. Does this arrangement keep the webbing tight enough? I´m under the impression, that on some boats an aluminium tube is used to hold the webbing.I am going to make the webbing out of polyester straps (like seat belts of a car).Which one…See More

"I had the same issue on my 40 foot Tangaroa. The previous owner had "solved" the problem of the slack cable by putting a section of elastic on each cable to take the slack out during turns. I didn't like this solution, so I fabricated…"

"Actually, I did some measuring again, and realised that 35 degrees does not make the tiller go that far over the side after all!Now I measured the travel of the tiller bar, and I figured it would be 180 cm (six feet) from one extreme to the other.…"

"Olli, Although they reference the plans sheet, I dot think it shows much of the rudder detail. But I will look at it again to be sure.  On the 38 the steering line runs around a drum with several turns for friction. The drum is connected…"

"One more thing: what would the maximum rudder angle be? I realised that if the rudder is turned 35 degrees, the tiller connection bar nearly touches the rear deck, and the tiller protrudes very far outside the hull. Actually the tiller hits the wall…"
