tips and techniques for tiki schooner rig sailing needed.

I have sailed my T 38 about a year now and was wondering if you would share your sailing method with this rig . When going to windward do you have the  foremain sheeted into the centre line and the rear main eased slightly or visa versa. I find I have to reef the rear main when reaching to balance the boat for the windvane with fresher winds. Would love to hear how people sail their boats......:)

many thanks

I have used this technique with every boat I have owned (full keel sloop, Tangaroa MKIV cutter ketch, full keel lug schooner, Tiki 30), as well as other boats I have crewed:

Trim the sails enough to point the direction you want to go with a minimal amount of weather/lee helm. Trim sails until the helm is neutral. Trim sails for speed. Trim sails until gaining a small amount of weather helm without losing too much speed. Lock in the wind steering on course. Have an adult beverage and relax.

If you are reefing the aft main for balance, it sounds like you are over trimmed. Generally, all sails should be eased/trimmed until they "just" fill, then eased or trimmed for balance and speed.

Thanks I will experiement with Easing/trimming the rear main more for that balance. I have found in fresher conditions on a broard reach she likes to be "pulled " more from the bow and the aft main tends to push her arse around.

Would love to hear the order people reef  on the different points of sail too. For example do people reef both sails together generally....?

If going down wind I tend to reef first the rear main, then the foremain then the head sail if needed. The boat is still quite balanced while I am still sailing.

Generally the headsail is the last to get reduced....What do other people do??

Obviously I'm not doing the adult beverage right:)
