The tillers on my Tiki 21 come forward to a point a few inches over and above the main hatches. They sit raised up a few inches, but to open a hatch I might need to temporarily move the tillers left or right.

Looking at photos of other 21s, I'm coming to the view that my tillers are a little too long. I'm inclined to shorten them a bit and add a tiller extension attached in the middle of the linking arm.

Can other tell me if the tillers should come over the hatches, or provide comments.

Thanks, Ian (thinking twice .... cutting once)

Hi Ian,

i have just taken my tiki out of the water to do some winter maintenance and one thing we discussed was how the tillers protrude a little over cockpit. I too have to move them to the side to lift the chin lid which I do not mind too much except when everything is tide down when on a swing mooring and I need to open the lid then the tiller tends to get moved up under a small amount of stress to open.

I am toying with the idea of bringing the rear piece of the lid forward and creating a seat back as one thing that does happen when sailing is that the person in the "passenger" seat gets hit in the back by the end of the tiller when it moves back and forth.

Maybe shortening the tiller is the answer.

Cheers Jay

I remember when I sailed Rick Hueschen's Tiki 21 that he had just chopped off a few extra inches from his tillers so that they would clear his removable dodgers. I plan to do the same on Beto, as I will have full time dodgers in place!

This leaves me wondering what is specified in the plans?

I'm out of the country and away from my plans, but the standard length is meant to protrude over the cabin tops a bit.

I was on the boat this Sunday and realised why you want the tillers to come over the hatches. If they were short and you fell onto them, there would be nothing to stop them breaking. If you lean on the tillers or the link arm, they should flex enough to come down onto the hatch top or the open rim.

For me that's this question answered.
