Hi everyone, especially all of you who live or have good knowledge of brazil.

I am imminently due to cross from Cape Town to brazil with my tiki 46 and I am looking for advice or recommendations for a marina or secure mooring. I may have to leave the boat for a a month or two as I have a possible short contract (30-60 days)and i really need to get back to work to replenish the funds.
The boat will either be unattended or my wife and 4 yr old daughter may stay inboard while I am away so I'm looking at options for both eventualities. I'm thinking of either a secure swing mooring, preferably with some security or person keeping an eye on her or a marina with some facilities if my family stays onboard. Ideally it would be between rio and Recife, however I'm open to all possibilities.
Of course cost is the big factor, I want as cheap as possible but not if security or safety is compromised too much, basically I'm not looking for the cheapest but really the best "value" and I want to be able to sleep soundly while I'm away knowing the boat and family will be just as I left them once I return.

Cheers

Marty

Hi,

in 2010 we came from Cape Town to Brazil. the skipper berthed the ship for some months in the Marina Jacare, some miles up into the rio paraiba do norte near Cabedelo, which is the most eastern harbour of both Americas. you will find some informations at www.noonsite.com. its a nice landscape, friendly people and less crime. I went swimming at the atlantic side of the peninsula, a wonderful, very long sandbeach. It was no problem to leave my stuff on the beach.

The ship was ok after 5 months allone in the marina.

fair winds, by crossing the "lovely ocean"

HI Marty

I stopped at Forteleza from CT in 2009. The marina is in front of a hotel. There is a bit of surge that comes in and its important to keep an eye on how things are tied up, also it is not in the safest part of town, so I would not recommend it for leaving a boat unattended.

hello Marty

I just arrived from Brazil, along the entire coast... recommended places: Cabedelo in Joao Pessoa in the north, In Rio de Janeiro I make a friend where you can SAFELY  and 100% free place by making a Bahamian mooring 100 meters away from my friends home (his name is Fernando Moura and  a wharram enthusiast as well)the interesting of this place is that you see the international airport from the mooring place.  but the very best place for the boat was Santo Andre in the Bahia State with an easy entrance if you have the right directions and waypoints ( i have those made by my own), where another wharram builders will wait for you with open arms. there are some other very safe places and i imagine cheap as well, like the Saco do Ceu bay in Ilha Grande where there are 100% safe moorings and no slums or poverty around, the holding for the Bahamian morring is good as well. away from airport though. Sta Catarina is safe too, more wharramists will take care from your boat and Rio Grande is great as well, but not that cheap.

not recommended: Maceio (dirty and with slums right in front of the anchorage), Paraty (too expensive)

PD: for Bahamian mooring advice contact me and i will post a detailed explanation.. i never pay to stay in a place , i just find a place safe enough to place my Bahamian mooring and i trust this more than a good mooring in a club. we let our boat in Trinidad and tobago this way for almost 5 months without any problem.

Alex, could you share details of your Bahamian mooring please ?

will post that in a separate discussion... so its easier to find in future for other interested fellows

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the replies, I also had seen the marina jacare and that actually sounds great, especially that I now have first hand reports.
Unfortunately I don't really want to leave my family on a swing mooring at this stage as I don't feel quite comfortable with that arrangement but I may change my mind if i can see the spot with my own eyes, but i would have no problem leaving the boat unattended on the mooring you describe. ( I just replied to your mooring discussion, I had a similar mooring in Thailand and it worked great) I am ideally looking for a nice place for my family to hang out while I am away.
I may not need anything as I haven't secured work as yet but in the offshore survey industry things can change in an instant. If anyone happens to need a survey engineer/ party chief or client rep then I'm your man!
Alex, could you possibly post GPS position of your new friend in rio near the airport as we'll probably be in rio and its always good to talk wharram with other enthusiasts! Also if you happen to have any other GPS positions of must visit spots I would be very interested.

Thanks

Marty

if your family stays on board , i would choose the anchorage in rio de janeiro in the case you go so far south, its safe, and LOTS of things to do there.. and my friend Fernando Moura will be a great host... but in this case i would anchor just off from the URCA beach .or even off the fire fighters station next to the yacht club, there is a small FREE jetty where to tie the dinghy.

Jacare is good as well , very quiet (other than the shooting we saw one afternoon on the next marina) stay at the french guy marina (cannot remember the name right now) or cheaper at the anchor  and pay for the marina services, which are not too much. Entry in Cabedelo is MUCH easier than in other places.... the friendliest were in Rio Grande. IN Cabedelo the police asked a prove of money of 4500 us dollar for each member from the crew , so bring your bank statements , credit cards statements and other cash you might have , otherwise they will give you just few days to stay. other than this the entry process was easy and friendly people. long walking though. brazil is very expensive at the moment, so try to bring all you can from outside. if possible avoid to buy gasoline it has 25% of alcohol and your motors will NOT work.  in Jacare there is bad or very bad internet connection.

Alex, know all. But Marty come to Rio, have one place is special to you: Buzios. Look in google earth

22º 44' 731 S

041º 52' 992 W

Have one litlle club and is in front of centre o Buzios City. Good secure and beatyfull place.

If you come to Rio talk with me or Fernando.

See You
