Creates a vortex causing lift to help performance to windward (unlikely), keeps the boat straigh when surfing across a bar (I prefer to drink at a bar), reduces hobby-horsing so more power is converted to propulsion (plausible), adds to drag (definately), provides a surface area that gets fouled first (certainly)

I've see one of those been put on a Pahi 63 being built in New Zealand I wonder how effective they are?

Here is a link to a pdf file by Bernd Kohler on "Anti-Vortex Panels."  They are designed to prevent vortexes, actually! The one in the photo above is too far back to work effectively according to Kohler. It depends on the hull shape, but 2/3 of the way back from the bows, on the inner hull sides, is the more likely location.

To be slightly more precise, the anti-vortex panels are located a bit behind the center of effort of the sails. Kohler has a formula to locate them accurately.

HI Kim

Thanks for the link to the erudite article about vortex REDUCERS. I'm less skeptical now. Does anyone have strong opinions about their efficacy?
