Davis Tiller-Tamer
This is way better than the bungee cord arrangement! I used 3/16" 12-strand dyneema (Amsteel), rather than the Davis line, due to its slickness. The line exits the tiller-tamer at greater than the 90 degrees Davis wanted, so the slicker line was needed.

Forgot to add that I used captive jam-cleats at the line's end for adjustment purposes.

Interesting picture in some other way, too. I have been looking at your engine mount a few times now. How does it work for you? Are you happy with it? Could you post a few more pictures to show details and position of the lowered engine? Does it hit the water when sailing (like the wharram standard design for T26 and 30 does)?

I replaced a simple line and cleat arrangement with the u-bolts/chain for stronger load capacity. It works fine: I keep the sled horizontal to the water, and this enables the engine to clear the water when raised for sailing (see the photos). The engine in the photos is a 25" longshaft that I have yet to break in; the previous engine was a 20" longshaft. I have no remote controls, but on this small boat I am usually in harbor whenever I am hand-steering the engine. In tight quarters being able to "steer" with the propellor is a huge plus.

Thanks for the pictures. I get a very good idea how your system works. No remote controls is the way to go, definitely. Simple and straight forward. I am still thinking what to do on my T30. I am just in the middle of building the cockpit and I made it without the engine well which is in the plans. I am not even sure if I want to put an engine on the boat. Thanks again, this is very good input for me.

If you sail in an "open" setting (no marina slips or busy harbors), no clocks :~), there is not as much reason to suffer engines. And you will be a better sailor! Glenn Tieman has interesting comments on "motorboats with sails" he encounters on his travels. . .:~)

Kim, marinas are still very rare in my part of the world (Korea), we have mostly fish harbors where you anchor to stay away from the rough fish boats and, yes Glenn Tieman is very inspiring and so are the Pardeys and a few others. My goal is certainly to have a real sailboat and not a motorsailor, that is one reason why I choose a JWDesign. We will see how things go.
