Wharram Builders and Friends

A Photo & Discussion Forum for Wharram Design Enthusiasts

We are currently working on a Narai MKI.  This is a very unusual harram. The current owner is a dentist in the Cayman Islands. He bought the hulls from the original builder and then gave them to someone in north FL who added lots of stuff over a couple of tears and then the owner removed the boat and took it to someone else and they worked on it for a while and then someone else worked on it.

Unfortunately, none of these people had a clue as to the Wharram philosophy of low windage and simplicity. The photos will show what I mean. The beams are solid bolted, but not in a manner that will remain water tight for any period of time. There are metal fittings attached all over the boat and they are not bedded well at all. The rudders are toed in about 15* and the hydraulic steering is terrible. It has two 18 hp Tohatsus and while they will move the boat about 7 knots in calm they do not have a great bite on the water and make it difficult to maneuver the boat. The rig is very short and worse there is no plave to attach the main sheet or jib sheets.  We have a lot of work to do to make the beam attachements stout enough and remake the bimini rigid enough to attach the main sheet to it.
