In the last days of October we grabbed the chance and used the sunny but windy and cold weather for our last trip in 2021 on Lake Neusiedl in Austria.

Hello Michael, That s pretty much my 1st participation on this site. I m refitting a tiki 26 in France and I saw that video on youtube looking for ideas and I thought, I ll look in Wharram builders for more information. I noticed your motor and I am myself on the point to install an equivalent one(1 or 2 propulsion spirit one maybe) and wonder how it performs with wind and current?. Could you share your experience with this motor ? happy with the Perfomance for the tiki ?

Welcome Vincent!

We have a Torqeedo Travel 1003 on our Tiki. I feel it´s strong enough for us, sailing on a lake. In the video you can see, that we often have to pass canals to reach the harbors around the lake. It happened only one time, that the motor power was too low in a canal. It was at the beginning of a thunderstorm, we had about 25-30 knots headwind and 1-2 knots current (the wind blows the water out of the harbor) against. But fact is: there are no tidal currents and we can anchor everywhere on the lake because it is very (!) shallow, waiting for calmer circumstances.

It is not easy to turn the boat under machine if you go slowly. I think your idea with two motors will help in this case and will give you more power whenever you are in need of it.

We are very happy with our Torqeedo. The power is enough for our sailing area and the capacity of the attached battery is impressive.

A friend of mine has the Spirit One and it looks that there is no difference in power or operating time to my Torqeedo. So I can recommend both of them. But it will depend to your expected sailing area and your approach (If you will wait until the tide changes).

Very important: take the long shaft model!

Thank you very much for this feedback and welcoming.  Herzlichen Dank !!

I hope to be sailing the atlantic coast this summer and further targets are around La Rochelle to Morbihan. The idea of 2 motor was for better control but 2 times 3kw would be too much also battery wise. I am now in kontakt with epropulsion mainly because we can supply the motor with external battery also on the 1kw motor. Should able to increase the range a bit. You are recommending the long shaft ? is due the "hobby horsing" and blade coming out of the water ? because I drew a mounting setup with the short shaft and i get the lower part of the motor at the same depth as the hull itself. A long shaft would increase the draft ? maybe i did a mistake there. I ll check again. Also playing with the idea to bring the motor under the bank next to the mast (amidship). Work is schedule to happen next april, i am working now on the planning (cockpit as to be redone and motorisation as I bought it pretty naked)

Viele Grüße

Vincent
