Here is good technique for man/woman overboard recovery. If the vessel has a motor, it should be started as soon as possible. Leave the sails up, just in case the motor becomes recalcitrant!  This is pertinent to my discussion on the News forum.

:~)  In your case, Charlie, perhaps you could "shoot" to just upwind of the mob and drift down to his/her position? As you say, practice is good, and in more ways than one. Seeing how your specific boat behaves in such maneuveres puts you at least half way there!

The most enlightening MOB drill you can pull is to toss over whatever represents the MOB, and tell those on deck that it's you that just fell overboard.  Sit back and watch fun.  If you ever recover whatever you threw overboard, dry it out on the way to by an inflatable harness for yourself.

When I learned sailing there was no GPS-MOB. We trained MOB-maneuvers until we got them blind and by heart. Upwind = fall off and go downwind - tack - go hard upwind - let the sheets go controlled, this way you can controll the speed, drift and direction to reach the point of rescue.

Downwind = harden up - tack - then same procedure as upwind.

But this only works if your boat tacks! Most of the boats have engine today - this makes things a bit easier.

How ever, often the conditions are so bad you wont sail back upwind - then use the sea-anchor to give your MOB a chance to swimm back if the person is lucky. I usually tow a long line with kinks, just in case. The best way is NOT to go over board - wear saeftyharness and tie it to the boat
