A Photo & Discussion Forum for Wharram Design Enthusiasts
Hey,
i would like to sail a few month in the mediterranean sea. Especially around islands. Corsika, Sardinien, Mallorca, Ibiza etc...
My question is, if it is realistic to reach these islands with the tiki 21...or if it is to risky??
Another question is about the eastern coast line from corsika... I read there are only few marinas...but i would prefer to sail directly onto the beach...is there any problem or advise, from people who have been there before??
I am interested in all information about catsailing/wharramsailing/ smallboatsailing for a longer time in this area :)
How expensive are the marinas for small cats? or is there a cheap possibillitiy to enter places to buy water and food with a tiki 21 where other boats cant enter??
thanks for any information
greetz

Check out the adventures of Rory McDougall and Cooking Fat. That might give you an idea of the ultimate capabilities of a Tiki 21, which go a bit beyond what JWD recommends:)
Hi Chris,
I can talk about bonifacio straits (south of corsica).
I only know 2 acceptable moorings in this area :
- the enter of bonifacio port, on the left, there is a calanque,
- in the calanque of figari, just behind the tower.
please take great care, you can have 40+ knots of wind in full summer, so try to avoid great ideas on the map which can become hell during the night (lavezzi for example).
Hi Chris,
I'm italian and last summer I sailed a lot with my tiki 21 around Corsica, Sardegna and Isola d'Elba, you can read my blog if you want detailed information about that.
To answer your questions:
yes it is realistic but, it depends how you decide to reach the islands. for example I don't suggest you to go in Corsica from France or Liguria; it's a long way to go there directly. I started sailing from La Spezia (Liguria) and I went south to Isola d'Elba, then I cross the sea and I arrived in Bastia (Corsica). After that I went south to the eastern cost of Corsica. You're right, only few marina there and for some miles south Bastia you can't go beach with your tiki due to a yellow cable in the water. After that the beach is totally free :)
Then I sailed to south and I cross the Bonifacio strait and I reached Maddalena island. Take care about that, do it only in really god sea/wind conditions and remember that when Mistral wind blows in the strait it become W in the strait, SW in the SE coast of corsica and NW in the NE coast of Sardegna.
I don't know if moorings are expensive I always been in free places.
I can suggest you to have two reef in order to reduce your sails both on mainsail and Genoa. Mistral wind can really blow strong in Corsica and Sardegna.
watch my blog, this is the link: http://golettabianca.blogspot.it/
and this is a video we made during Bonifacio strait cross. the wind was about 30 knots. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24ACLJrQjBA
Have a good time!
