I was daydreaming about another boat, god forbid. But if you could choose to build either a Raka or tiki 38 which one would you build and why?

cheers paul.

I look and study all this two boat, the only reason for choice Raka is money, T38 addition to being bigger, with 2 masts is more expensive. The raka is more narrow, But looks great, I think the JWD can do one tiki 35 with good headroom and one mast, four beams, two tiki 38 beam and 2 tiki 30 beam

Rogerio, is the raka a lot smaller inside than the t38? I like the idea of a fast boat for cruising.

Yes, I never get into one Raka, but the T38 have big bunks in knee level, the Raka have bunks in floor level...in knee level Rake is too much narrow. I do one mix of this too boats and give a name RANGO 11m

The Raka is supposed to be a racing boat and so can't be compared with the T38,  which is a standard cruising boat.

As a result the Raka has minimal accomodations.   But built carefully to avoid excess weight and fitted with a modern Bermuda Rig,  is a fast and smooth sailer.

I had exactly the same dilemma and decided first to go for a Raka. Then, after a couple of months thinking back and forth about different modifications I skipped the Raka because of a very simple fact. There is not even one double berth possible without changing the hull dimensions/design. My wife strictly refused to support the purchase or building of such a "useless" boat. Although I liked very much the idea of this fast and elegant Catamaran I decided to go for a T38. Now, after talking personally to Hanneke and discussing the speed issue I am sure that for my purposes the T38 would be the better boat. Hanneke told me that, if the T38 is not loaded for circumnavigation but only for dailsailing, approximately the same travel speeds and top speeds are possible. She reported from a T38 sailing with 16/17 knots, not in a burst but constantly for quite a while in wind forces of 5 to 6 bft. This is fast enough for me. Unfortunately I still have not the money to buy or built a T38, so I am looking now more toward a T30 to be able to get a boat as early as possible. Even the T30 has more space under the decks as the Raka!

@Rogerio: A "thicker" Raka would maybe end upin a copy of the angaroa ???

Cheers and allways fair winds for all of you

Lord me, it seems my wish for a bigger boat was viewed upon favourably by Odin.I am the O.P. and as I have stated elsewhere on here I am in the process of bringing a Narai MKIV back to life.;)
