What boat (s) are you building or do you own?: Tiki 21 - now turning one of the hulls into a proa which will be more easy to pull up on the beach with fewer people.

About me or us?: Living since 2003 on a Philippine island. Built a Tiki 21 and used a Hobie 16 rig (had lost the hulls)..

Looking to?: My Tiki 21 was partly destroyed by a typhoon. Now I am in the process of building a proa out of one of the hulls using what I have gathered through the years and what is locally available.. locally growing bamboo, mahogany ("Honduras") and a Hobie 16 rig and various bits and pieces of boats I owned earlier ...
The idea is to create a proa out of the remaining hull (one was partly destroyed by a falling tree in a typhoon), using two crossbeams and locally growing bamboo for ama and safety ama.

There is a Hobie 16 mast plus good mainsail, which I will try first - trying to do all this on a low budget...

The Main has three reefs. I used a one line reefing system. It will have lazy jacks and all so it can be used to support a cockpit awning and mosquito net.

There is a 5hp Tohatsu extra long shaft which will be mounted on the crossbeam on the safety ama side with a mechanism to lift and lower it as needed...

We cut the fin at the stern and will use the Hobie's traveler rail to allow the rudder to be lifted when beaching. There are not always plenty of people around when beaching.

The hull got an extra five layers of epoxy with roving on the bottom so it won't wear easily off when pulling her on the hard...

The rudder will be made of mahogany strips (own planting) glued into one plank ... still trying to work out details...

on port there will be a safety ama ...

The ama will adjusted to allow upright sailing without the ama touching the water in low winds/seas...

We just fitted the pieces loosely together to see what way to go - in the Philippines people use nylon fishing line for the lashings - they last quite well when painted with acrylic paint...

Bamboo is treated with Timbor (boric a.) and then covered with epoxy, then it will be painted with acrylic paint for UV protection.

I would recommend a metal strip to protect the keel when beaching. The epoxy will wear down by time. We used an aluminum tube cut in thirds but stainless steel flatbar is better in my opinion.

And as I learned from Hanneke Boon a sharp edge on the keel is very usefull to hinder waterflow and consequently reduce leeway. This is why I would decide against a round tube the next time.

Of course you are right that the whole thing is no big deal. On the other hand palaver is best about unimportant details.

Ich habe einen ganzen Haufen von Geldscheinen in der Kasse gelassen, den ich allein mit dem Restaurant verdient habe, in der Abwesenheit der Besitzerin, und nicht einen einzigen Pfennig für mich behalten. Ich bin ohne Geld mit Autostop und LSD im Blut und Kopf nach Deutschland zurückgereist und du hättest ohne weiteres die nette Dame wieder besuchen können, aber macht nichts, man kann sich eben nicht immer richtig verständlich machen.
