Concerning the junk Tiki30 rig, I didn't design it. I asked to Sunbird Marine Services http://www.sunbirdmarine.com/ and in fact it was the designer Alan Boswell (who works with Sunbird Marine) who designed my Swing Wing rig (which has a copy right). The building of the mast is my own design according ideas from Gougeon epoxy book. If you want a more classical junk rig , with the help of the book "Practical Junk rig from HG Hasler and JK Mc Leod you can design yourself a such rig. A good example of a such design and building rig is the Tangaroa AORAI : http://www.aorai.eu
To get my sil plan I had not a direct contact with Alan Boswell by only via Sunbird Marine.
I design roughly my free masts on a long piece of cartoon at scale1/10 ( at this time I had no my present QCAD software).
Before the end of my Tiki46 building I want to actualise her blog building and I'm going to find a few time to make a little blog only about the building of my Tiki30 masts with a few additional CAD drawings.
In resume the datas of the mast are:
- diameter at the foot : 100mm
- diameter at the deck : 200mm
- diameter at the top : 80mm
made with 12 bi-conic stringers of 24mm thickness
Here is a drawing of the section of the mast at deck level
It's not necessary to get the Gougeon's book to understand this method in which I found a short example with the building of a boom.
It's simple because the stringers are cut at 90° and the "V" void between the stringers are filled with thick epoxy glue.
The frame of the mast is made of round pieces of wood with 12 faces on each 50cm as you can see on the blog of PHA's building.
Yes to cut the stringers in the timbers with a minimum of waste, you have to make timbers of 1.1m longer than the masts ( heigh between the keel and the deck) but the length of the mast depend of the type of junk rig you choose. If you choose a classical junk rig as Aorai it will be shorter.
I have no news from Robin Blain of Sunbird Marine. I know since last Summer he stop it's participation in the JRA committee and I don't know if he is retired from Sunbird Marine now.
You can have a lot of informations concerning the JRA association site : http://www.junkrigassociation.org/ Now for a little price you can have access to all the news letter and to a lot of informations concerning the junk rig.
The Swing Wing rig is efficient but it has a higher cost due to its double sail , the new classical junk rigs with camber battens as on APATIKI are not so much efficient but have a good performance against the wind comparing the classical rig with straight battens. One other idea developed by Arne Kverneland in the JRA is to use straight battens with curves make in the sails and he is very satisfied with it.
About the masts, in waiting I make a little article to resume its building, I join the plan of the mast I draw with QCAD ( you can find easily a free version on the web) : Mats plan PHA.dxf
The masts were wrapped with a 450g/m² biaxial + cabon cloth one meter below and above the deck to reinforce this area.
For the Tiki46 instead to wrapped the glass cloth around the mast, I cover one half side one day and the other part one another day after to have sand the sides of the first day to make and invisible overlay. The advantage is to be able to do the job alone or at two.
