Water borne epoxy.

The above, of which details are below, has proved incredibly useful to me. All the work to date, on my TangaroaMk1, has been done while the boat is afloat. The biggest problem has been to keep the moisture content of timber and ply down to acceptable levels.

This, water borne epoxy, I use as a sealer. It is tolerant of damper timber than regular epoxy . A couple of coats within a half hour or so enable regular epoxy/fibre mixes to then be used for… Continue

Pete Rigby's Tangaroa Mk 1

‘Eva’ is a Tangaroa Mk1, built in the 1970’s, and in 2006, given to me.

The previous owner was an Australian, married to a woman from The Phillipines. They had lived aboard for some years, with the idea of sailing the boat back to Australia. This dream faded.

I had carefully avoided anything to do with boats for many, many years. I’d grown up with a boat builder father, who stopped early in the 1960’s, when it seemed timber was doomed, and GRP was the… Continue

Poor you! you have had a horrible time!! It's good to have you back in the world of Wharrem though.

The bloke who originaly built our Tangaroa turned up on Lipsi this summer, a complete coincidence, he had no idea it was here. He said his eye fell on it as soon as he entered the harbor (in his huge plastic mono-hull Tut tut). He told me that he thought it looked in exelent shape, that the sails were the originals (ehm, hopefully the wallet will stretch to new ones next year!). And the best bit was when I asked him what damage he thought had happened to the mast and if he thought I should replace it (if you rememeber the discussions about the bend in it). He gave me such a look of horror, he said that he had paid a lot of money for the mast and it was designed specialy with the bend and it was the reason that the boat was so fast, he said that he got 15 knots out of her on a regular basis! So I'm quite happy that we didn't junk it as suggested!! I got the blokes e-mail address but I must have written it wrong as I have tried sending e-mails but they all come back.

My dad is planning to come again this year, hopefully early Septmeber, for our second round of sailing lessons.
