so first you put up the mast, than you fix the...compass. (?)

Yes, but the compass box is not essential. It can be removed from the 3cm thick piece of hardwood which holds the mast in the mastfoot. I have some vent holes in the bottom of the compass box through which I lead the electric wires to connect them inside the compass box. One wire comes from the battery, one from the masthead light(runing inside the mast)  and one is the compass light.
