We have delivered these two Tiki 8ms to the Marriott Beach Resort in Marco Island, FL. They use them to take guests for 2 1/2 hr trips several times a day. They frequently beach the boats so that their guests can collect seashells and swim for a few minutes. They are very pleased with the looks and performance of these boats. David

Congratulations David!
Do they have any special protection for that intensive beaching? Just asking to see if I could figure out something for my cat.
Rgds.
Héctor.

We put extra layers of glass on the keels of our boats.I feel that this adds less or equal weight than any type of keel shoe and can't become unattached. Any time you are routinely driving up onto the beach it is tough on the anti-fouling paint. We put on extra paint and when it starts to wear off it is a simple matter to touch up the paint. These boats get used 6-10 hrs a day 5-7 days a week year round. They therefore are lifted out with a forklift every 3 months and cleaned and waxed and have their motors serviced and the bottom paint touched up. David

What about a keel guard like a sacrificial strip of tough pvc that fits neatly to the keel without causing too much drag, it's light, cheap and easy to replace. Due the ammount of stone and shale beaches we have it's very popular on the boats around here. Lessens my work load substantially.

With a keel guard you still wear bottom the paint off the guard. You also must attach the guard to the keel. This means fasteners into the keel, which unless properly potted will lead to rot in a bad spot. You also have to be concerned about the keel shoe coming off at some point. For now we will stick with additional glass. Clean and simple

Not necessarily, the keel guards I use are adheared with a two part adhesive and if applied properly do not allow any water ingression whatsoever the alternative of exposed laminate will cause wicking which will cause greater problems down the line.

congratulations david. very nice cats; only a quetion; why you discarded the tiki soft wing sail? it's more amicable for guests as it hasn't boom and sails ery well (maybe the american market claims for modern rigs/sails and i'm not aware of that)

They wanted to use their existing mainsails due to the graphics. Also they like having the mainsail drop down into lazy jacks for simple stowage.

Wow! Excellent photo of very pretty boats.

I agree that keel guards are a problem. We removed the ones we had on Peace and recommend extra glass. We do beach Peace but it is not common and there is no wear if you select soft sand beaches. Ann and Nev
