To reduce the force on a crab claw you "rock" the sail down to a more horizontal position. This can be done in seconds without changing the sail area. However this reduces windward ability greatly! A reef point could be added to the sail but you would need to lower the rig to the deck to reef it. Not a big deel on a small boat.The crab claw will never be adequate to windward because the sail can't forms an airfoil shape. If you attached the foot of sail at the tack and clew only, windward ability improves slightly. I think if you made an upsidedown windsurfer sail using a wish bone boom that might work. You would still have the center of effort high up(bad idea for cats)....Kevin
