i have glued on the sacrificial keel today(19x25mm timber) then i will glass it with some biaxial tape and glue and screw a stainless strip above the glass.i have a lot of sanding to look forward to though as the fairing of the hull is next.

With all the sanding ahead of me i have put it off for manyana,the mast is a project i have been looking forward to building and have started by scarf joining the timbers as well as glueing the fillets.i have decided to extend the mast by 1foot,presumably the mast stays will be increased by the same amount.

i started shaping the mast today all was going well until i discovered a section along the mast that had been glue starved and had split open,i then found some more sections that need more glue,i have filled the gaps and lightly clamped the offending sections together as too much pressure just increased the split,as i am going to glass the stick this will strengthen any dodgy bonds,i was real cranky about this but i am better now;)

Paul do you used lashes (ropes) or clamps ? for do the mast ?

Rogerio i used both clamps and rope,but one must be careful when placing the last timber on for glueing as to much messing around can mean the glue moves from the surfaces you want to bond. i suspect this is what happened to me as well as the surfaces not touching properly when  clamped.

Well as i write this the new timber for the mast is scarfed and the glue is curing. A beekeeper mate of mine warned me about the blue streaks in hoop pine a while ago that are a sign of improper curing,he said they would use this timber to make beehives with,i am pleased to say my new wood is a lovely buttery colour.

Hi Paul! Good luck with your new mast. Check out Scott Williams Blog on how he made his mast. He made it in 2 halves on a custom 26' long table and a bucket load of clamps. This gave him more control of the glueing and the clamping forces. He was also able to create a very straight mast. Before he closed up the 2 halves he also installed conduits for the mast head electrics.

The mast building scares me !!! I wait my hour...

So the new mast is all laminated and so far so good i made sure my temporary shelf,bench was straight and level.this time i went a bit overboard with the glue.I will shape it next week

I have shaped the second stick with a slight taper near the masthead.I have also glassed the mast as extra protection and hopefully a bit more strength or rigidity. I have been off my game for a while with inner ear infection and have had the guts kicked out of me for a while but things are back on track now.p.s Rogerio i will put up some pics;}
