i now understand why illegal logging will not go away anytime soon.i bought a piece of teak that went 2mx30x200mm that cost au$ 150.00 well i nearly croaked.i will be using it for the mast foot and other bits like cleats. a bloke i know belongs to some sort of timber club and when i mentioned that i was looking for some decent clear hoop pine he said it just so happens that he and his mates are milling up some fine timber and would i be interested, you betcha.

Hey Paul, what I do, is check out the off cut bin at my timber merchant. Last piece of Teak I got cost me zilch. Most of the  hardwood needed is in small bits anyway. Using off cuts also goes some ways to appeasing my guilt about deforestation.

ola folks, well today i ordered my sails from rolly tasker agent in sydney called sail solutions inspired by a photo on geminidawns page i have gone with a tanbark finish i just love the look of them.i have been busy with the tillers and have found the dimensions for the gap between the two pieces of 50x19 to be too narrow to accept the rudder head and have made the necessary adjustments.

Hi Paul, this is true! A mate of mine also found this out, unfortunatele after making the tillers! I think the error has come in with certre line measurement. That is the measurement of 5/8" (16 mm) is half of what it should be, which is 32mm.

Another area that seams open to interpretation is the mast step. On sheet 18 the dimension is given as 38 mm (two 19mm laminated together, but on dimension sheet 3 it is shown as a single 25mm piece.

i made the gaff jaws last week out of tassie oak from the local bunnings[home hardware] the timber was nicely grained and clear and cheap compared to the bespoke timber merchants.on the plans it specifies  an epoxy fillet along the jaws which i did but made them thinner and then i laminated a strip of 6mm ply to strengthen them i shall give it a layer of glass too.

back to lofting.i bought some more plywood today and have started the second hull, the process went fairly quickly as one is more familiar with the process and in my case i was less precious than on the first hull.i have found a really good paint shop locally and have gotten excellent advice regarding their product and its application, quite refreshing as so many outlets are staffed with spotty youths with no idea;)

i have been cutting out the bulkheads for the next hull from plywood that cost me a third of the last lot i bought.on first impressions it is not as pretty as the hoop pine plywood it is a lot lighter in weight but has more imperfections than the original hoop i used.the ply is marketed as'' pink ply'' and is of hardwood.but as the price is a major incentive for my purchasing it the minor voids and imperfections are something i can live with.the expensive ply was also not as void free as i had hoped.sometimes buying the dearest product does not equate to a far superior quality.both lower hull sides have been cut glued and coated.

i moved the near completed hull from one side of my cottage to the other to make room for the next hull assembly.i made a rudimentary cart out of a $29 sack trolley.the move was interesting to say the least as i attempted it on my own.this rugged individualism did not last long as the porch where i am buidling it has a sloping floor, resulting in the hull wanting to tilt over.common sense prevailed and i got some help and all was good.i have set up a better table this time for the stitching of the next hull at a height that is more freindly to my back.
