I'm planning a Crab Claw rig for my Tiki 26 and have some questions for those with experience, especially Hans Wakataitea. I'm not trying to beat Bermudan performance, just make a good basic, affordable cruising rig.

1) Best method of attaching the sail tack - directly to the bottom of the mast (Wakataitea) or with the tack forward of the mast (Ontong Java) ?

2) The angle of the sail spars and the plan shape of the sail at the tack - 60 degrees (Wakataitea) or less…

3)Curved or straight edges to the plan shape of the sail - straight or curved spars top and bottom?

4) Jib, no jib?

5) Best method of reefing?

I've spent a lot of time searching the net and found lots of very good stuff and now it's time to come up with a compromise design out of all the info that I can actually make and use. It will be very low budget. I'll probably make the mast and spars unless I happen on a lucky find that will suit.

These various differences would be interesting to experiment with. I have good sheltered waters to get plenty of experience with the rig before venturing further.

Thanks for any help,

Steve
How do you design a Crab Claw rig for your boat?tag:wharrambuilders.ning.com,2014-12-05:2195841:Topic:1236412014-12-05T22:13:27.179Zwakataiteahttps://wharrambuilders.ning.com/profile/wakataitea

I have seen tons of photos and videos of various types of rigs on different types of boats, but unlike the junk rig Bible - Practical Junk Rig - I have yet to find anything that exists for the oldest known sailing rig, the Crab Claw. In fact, I have yet to find any "How to" articles for designing your own crab claw rig.

Anyone have any resources or ideas?

Does anyone know of any attempts/tests of a crab claw rig for a Tiki 21? Inspired in part -- I think -- by crewing on Aluna's trip out to Hawaii, Thomas Nielson introduced Mike and me to the idea as we were dreading building a 21.5' round mast out of square timbers (as called for in the plans).

Thomas made this sketch a couple weeks ago...

...which I find remarkably similar to the first of Hans' drawings on the comment…

He recommended sticking to the plans, but unfortunately he didn't offer any brighter ideas about how/whether a crab claw rig could work. What do you all think?

How cool would it be to have an efficient, family-safe, rig that utilized the 12-18' long, 2-4" diameter bamboo poles that are so cheap and prevalent here in non-Tropical Seattle?!

Fair winds,
Scott

Crab Claw informationtag:wharrambuilders.ning.com,2009-09-10:2195841:Topic:102442009-09-10T00:25:27.000Zwakataiteahttps://wharrambuilders.ning.com/profile/wakataitea
I am going to build a Tehini starting this coming spring and after seeing the crab claw rig I am going to give it a go I love the low tech aspect. Is there somewhere I can get more info on the details? Look forward to hearing from you all.
