Searching for a Wharram

Hej, we are first time buyers and would like to know the main things to look for when buying a Wharram Would like to hear your thoughts , cheers

That is a really broad question. When you say Cats, do you mean Wharram Catamarans, or any type of catamaran?

What are your catamaran aspirations? Do you plan to cruise lakes, be a weekender, coastal, live aboard, cross oceans? All of this matters.

How many will use the boat? Any kids? What is your sailing experience? Do you prefer stripped down and plain or do want lots of systems? Can you do your own work on the boat or do you have to hire it out?

Thanks for the quick reply, Well preferrably a Wharram Cat.manageble not too complicated.We have never sailed a Cat and have have thoughts of hiring one.Most of our sailing experience has been in our Hurley 22ft up and down Denmark and a little in Australia So about 2 years sailing.We would like cruise around the world crossing oceans, live aboard and we have 4 children, ages 1½ ,7,8 and 12

With 4 children, the smallest you could get away with is a TIKI 38. With a 38, you may start to encounter weight issues when provisioning for ocean crossings or for extended cruising away from fresh food. A TIKI 46 or Pahi 52 would be a better choice for load carrying with your larger family.

What to look for when purchasing on the used market? The first thing I look for is what kind of equipment they put on the boat. Did they use cheap wiring and electrical, cheap rigging, etc. The reason behind this is that some home builders will start to skimp towards the end due to time and finances so they start to purchase progressively cheaper and inferior equipment. This can tell you about the boat's maintenance - people who run out of money for equipment usually do not have to money to properly maintain the boat.

Check for rot with a small hammer and a piece of thin rubber mat. You are not trying beat the boat up, just find the "dead" spots. The rubber is to protect the boats finish. The biggest area of concern on all larger Wharram cats are the beam troughs. If these get water between the glass and wood, they start to rot. Always inspect these carefully. The second big place is the deck areas around any hatch, port, or deck seam. The last place to check is the mast step(s). These can be prone to rot as well if not build properly.
