A Photo & Discussion Forum for Wharram Design Enthusiasts

This is Giovani from Tiki 38 Amelia, currently living aboard in Paraty- RJ, Brazil, a region of light winds.
I am studying the possibility of increasing the masts to 12m, changing the service sails, installing a bowsprit and installing a screecher and a gennaker sail.
Any suggestions?
The idea would be to increase the masts in the TOP region, increasing them with an aluminum tube, leaving approximately 1m inside the wooden mast and 2m above.

Hi Giovani.

Yes it is possible to lengthen your masts with bigger sails. I did it on my Pahi 42 when I built it in Cape Town, South Africa. I then sailed it to Nosy Be, Madagascar 13 years ago, an area also with lighter winds most of the year.

I lengthened my mast by 1.5m to get headroom as I built a hard-top and a centreand rear box to utelise for living space. Hind sight I needed to make bigger sails, whitch I did but not enough.

Your lengthened wooden mast with aluminium sleeve might send more weight to the top. Not sure though. You cant source aluminium masts for the whole length?

Your screcher/gennaker is a better option than a bigger genoa. The gennaker I think is the same as an asemetrical spinnaker whitch is the way to go if you can afford it.

Take courage my friend.

Forgot to say. My Pahi42 is schooner riged, just like the Tiki 38. My Fore and Main masts are 13m heigh.

I also built a 1m A-frame bowspirit to fly my narrow-cut spinaker in a sock from. I use it whenever I can.

Thank you so much Lovako!
Instead of increasing the mast and the stays, I will just put a top mast in the fore mast and use to hoist a asemetrical spinnaker.
Thank you
I search for some pics in your profile but didn´t find it.
