<p>From bow to stern i have 5-10cm up and down movement and i have been in F8 weather on numerous times.</p>

<p>The reason shape of the upper block is so that when you tighten the lashings (by making horizontal wraps around the vertical lashings), they will not make contact with the block.</p>
