I like this
«boatbuilding with epoxy, which is basically too easy for words! (just uncomfortable, dirty and horrible)».
And will soon see if I can confirm :-)

A half lap joint includes a right angle in the joints and this is where crack progression originates. It (the crack) works exponentially.

Way back when, the Comet airplane suffered from this (blew up because of square cornered windows) and that's why technologists discovered new things about corners! Make them round wherever you can. Some big freighters went down to the bottom of briny also for that reason.

The 8:1 joint is easily made with a cutting jig and sawn by hand just so with a sharp saw: no need for anything more. Routers etc, throw 'em away they are noisy and pollute you and the environment.

When you are gluing up a scarf like this you will need to pin it to stop it slipping so predrill for a little panel pin and pull it out when the joint is set, as suggested above.

Speed clamps and a few bits of polythene around are very useful.

Have everything to hand, the glue dictates your speed and once started there is no return.

I have a vacuum press which I have used for veneering, but have never needed to use it for boatbuilding with epoxy, which is basically too easy for words! (just uncomfortable, dirty and horrible).
