Dynema for lashing beams

HI,

What do you think about replacing polyester ropes by dynema ropes for lashing beams ?

I sail a Pahi31 with standard beam configuration (which is different in Tikis): big stainless steel bolts + lashing.

I pondered this same question but went with Polyester in the end for these reasons.

1. That is what it says in the plan and it is tried and tested.

2. Polyester has a small amount of stretch which i believe helps with the flex of the whole structure. Dyneema has very little if any stretch. I used dyneema for the frappings though.

3. Polyester is a lot less expensive than dyneema, and once again is all that is necessary.

Thank you for jour answers. I worry a bit about the lashings since I met a crew member who told me that he broke some lashings in a storm.

Another question : what do you call frappings ?

frappings are the secondary lasing around the two sides of the primary lashing between th beam bottom and the lashing cleat squeezing the two sides together to make them tighter.

The only way I can see lashings break is if they are old and damaged by UV light, the wrong diameter, the wrong type of rope, or insufficient turns around the beam and lashing block. If you stick to the plans and have a good maintenance schedule you will be fine.
