I realize that was intentional on the part of JWD, since the boat is expected to be built by amatuers with questionable materials and skills. For example, my quick computations indicate that if I construct the mast using a birdsmouth construction and clear douglas fir, I can probably cut the weight in half without sacrificing any strength. I'm also tempted to take another look at the size of the epoxy fillets in the hull, since once the strength of the fillet exceeds the material being joined, any additional epoxy is simply added weight. Not too thrilled with the method given to glass over the keel either.</p>

<p>I'm not entirely going off the reservation. What I can't figure out on my own, I've got a 4th generation wooden boat builder to consult with, and if necessary, access to a naval architect.</p>
