I believe that all Wharram designs have raked masts of about 7 - 12 degrees in the different designs.

I wonder whether those who installed antennas in the mast top compensated for their mast rake, and whether there is any experience whether the installation in a strictly vertical position (deviating back from the mast rake) increased performance in either VHF or AIS.

The two Wharrams I bought in the last 10 years both had the antennas following the mast rake, i.e. not strictly vertical. Whilst the first boat had only VHF, I did never try to estimate how performant this was. The second boat had VHF/AIS combined with a splitter, The AIS VSWR was always to high (3:1), so probably transmitting was not very effective.

I wonder whether this was (partly) caused by the antenna position?

Could a Tiki 21 owner with a standard rig measure their bridle length for me ?

(Context: I bought a '21 2nd hand, but it has a modified rigging with a furler attached to an extra beam... The plan set transferred to me by the owner appears to be incomplete -- with probably a missing measurement sheet or dimensions table...) The bridles in this modified set up are smaller than normal (at 1,30m can not join them midway), and laced on the extra beam.

I wish to revert to the standard rig with no furler, and restore the original geometry.

For this, the bridles length is essential, as it determines the height of the junction point with the forestay.

As extra info, I would also appreciate some expression of the original mast rake. In my current setup, the mast is almost 90 degrees upright, but from parts of the drawings I do have with the plans, it looks like the top of the mast should lean somewhere between 0.30m and 0.5m aft ?

PS: to avoid any misunderstanding: I have addressed a service request to JWD, mentioning I'm willing to pay for the service (but not ready to pay in full for the complete plans, which I assume is agreeable)... Anyway, no answer so far so I thought I'd just ask for help ;-)

This morning armed with a gin pole made out of scrap timber and the glint of a rugged individualist in my eyes I raised the mast on my own in winds gusting to 20knts.

The lesson I learned here was that sometimes it's just better to do things yourself, regardless of how keen the helpers are.

All good now.

Okay. Please correct me if i'm wrong on any of this.

I'm looking for masts for my Tiki 46. I would prefer aluminium but i cannot find 7-8 inch diameter with a 3/16 wall anywhere in north america. (except from a couple of flagpole companies that will not even return my call when i mention i'm looking for a mast. They wouldn't even sell me two lower, untapered, sections that were the exact right dimensions. I even had a friend who worked for a tent company try to buy the lower…

I even had a friend who worked for a tent company try to buy the lower sections and they refused!!!)

The closest i could get is 1/4 inch wall but that weighs 345 lbs for 48 feet (need extra for 2 splices to make 42 feet, as they usually come in 20 foot sections)

So i resigned myself to build the two masts out of douglas fir using the birdsmouth method. I figured i needed about 150 bd ft of douglas fir per mast and THAT weighs anywhere from 2.2-2.5 lbs a bd ft, making the total weight anywhere from 330 - 375 lbs?!

That seemed like a really heavy mast and was the reason i didn't go with the 1/4 inch aluminium tube in the first place, so is that a reasonable weight for a mast? and if it is i might as well go with the aluminium tube at 1/4 inch.

Any suggestions? It's been keeping me up at night and i've even bought a used regular monohull type mast but i can't bring myself to use it. (the gaff and sleeve wouldn't work anyway)

My next project is building a new mast made of carbon. I make it 7.50 meter long. Also the gaff will be longer. The peak is higher than the normal sail. There is a fullbatten area on the gaff and a normalbatten area on the rest of the sail. The gaff and the battens are short enough for easy handling.

The sail area is 18.70 square meters - four square meters more than my old sail.

Looking at buying Tiki 38 Tanoa in South Africa. Lost fore mast due to step failure, thus need to replace and rebuild madt step/box. A tapered fibreglass mast of a bigger Wharram sourced as replacement. Rear mast round section alluminium. Any thoughts on one fibre one alluminium. Both madts and all rigging of boat at present. Have the opportunity to make changes to both masts and do it right !! But need help please!
Thanx
Emil Glassing a wooden masttag:wharrambuilders.ning.com,2015-09-28:2195841:Topic:1364342015-09-28T19:16:37.074ZOlli Väänänenhttps://wharrambuilders.ning.com/profile/OlliVaeaenaenen

Should I glass the wooden masts I am making for my Tiki 31? Glassing would make the mast stronger, but does glass add to chafe when using the wingsail? Also I would not want to paint the masts but keep the natural looks of the wood. Using UV-resistant epoxy would allow me to do this? But should I also use varnish on top of the epoxy?
