I sail a Tiki 26 and would like to include a Dan buoy on board in case of a MOB situation.

The trouble is where to position it where it won't get in the way of the tillers and the main sheet but can readily be deployed.

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

thank you.

Hi Nick,

Here's a solution in a slightly different direction. Instead of having a MOB stick that is combersome and breakdown in the sun, have an SOS Dan Buoy inflatable marker instead. This is a small pouch, not much bigger than a lunch pack, that can be stored around the cockpit area. In a MOB emergency it auto inflates when it hits the water to a large very visible marker pole with strobe light and much more. View videos and etc at www.just-marine.net It is ISAF compliant for offshore racing, and matches where possible ISO12402, the standard for inflateble life jackets. Easliy maintained by the owner.

Thanks for the suggestion Philip, I appreciate the benefits of this device, however it's out of my price range. I already have a dan buoy, just need to put it somewhere

Hi Nick,

Yes, no problem. A couple of safety suggestions for all. 1) Test the floatation of your pole marker every now and again. A pro yacht manager came through my booth at Strictly Sail in Oakland two weeks ago. He was testing all his safety gear before leaving for a passage. He said his pole marker went straight to the bottom. Not sure what flotation system he had but it failed. 2) For those that own a MOM product, regularly check the "pull pin" is operable. I spoke to a real MOB survivor recently. He had serviced his MOM one month before he went overboard. The crew could not deploy their MOM because the "pull pin" had seized up. 3) Make sure you have a large drogue on whatever marker you have. Many of them are very small and the marker will blow away from the swimmer just when they need it. This includes the MOM products.

There are retailers, such as Landfall Navigation who offer the Dan Buoy quite a bit less than my web price.

Safe sailing to all!

Philip
