Hi David,

a nice boat you have! On this picture I see a detail that interested me - you put the masts into tabernacels. Before I just saw it on pictures from Pete Hills boats. As we are already thinking about changing the rig on our new boat, too, to junk rig and considering tabernacels, I would like to know more about the design, construction and dimension of the tabernacels and the masts. Do you made it alone or with the help of Pete? Do you also maybe have contact details like an emailadress from Pete?

I hope the beginning of winter is not too bad in Europe at the moment;-)

Thank you very much!

Tom

Hello thomas,

Thanks for your comments. Yes we decided on tabernacles on advice from Pete Hill, with his experience of through-hull masts always leaking no matter what you do! So that was the main reason for putting them in tabernacles. My family and myself did all the work ourselves on the boat including masts and tabernacles, but we used to entice Pete with a meal and he could cast his eyes over the work in progress. The design of the tabernacles, masts and sails were all Pete's design, we just followed the instructions haha. It was always a worrying moment when Pete used to visit - and scratch his beard and ask 'why have you done it this way David?' Which we learned very quickly meant we'd done it wrong! Pete Hills has a facebook address in his wife's name Carly Hill. The last we heard he was in the Canary Islands, sailing in the new year to Cape Verde and Senegal.

Good luck and keep in touch, any questions you have don't hesitate,

Regards,

David

Hi David,

the leaking Masts are the main reasons for us, too, to go for tabernacles. We tried a lot, but never got them 100% tight. Now, with the new steel boat we think it should be much easier to install tabernakles - we will see and try to get in contact with Pete, maybe he will sail to the Caribbean after Senegal? Then we have a chance to meet him.

We would like to learn more about the split junk Rig, too. We have seen it on your pics from Petes new boat and have talked with Allan on Zebedee - a sisterschip of Badger - about this rig just a couple of days ago. It sounds quite interesting.

What are your experiences up to now with your catamaran? And what are your plans in the future?

All the best

Tom

Hi Tom,

what do you think of this Junk Rig:

Alleda - Iroquois

Would you like it more than the conventional Iroquois, is it safer, or what are advantages and dasadvantages?

Thank you for your comment to fuehrer414@arcor.de

I want to buy a cheap Catamaran, to live on it and go around the world.
