Rory, is your traveler always set straight as the picture shows? Those are beautiful sails, btw!

Hi Kim, yep always as tight as I can to emulate a straight bit of traveller track. makes it easier to adjust and the control lines take less load.

The sails were fresh out the bag and on the 1st hoist in this pic taken last year, putting Cookie together again for the Jester Challenge. Made by Westaway Sails here in UK. Can't praise them enough. they made the original sails that carried Cookie round the world and are still serviceable 20 years and 30,000 miles later! I gave them the old sails as a guide and I asked for a tweak here, bit more size there, battens in the main etc and they delivered a faultless suit of canvas that makes Cookie get up and boogie!!!

How do you stop the gaff from bearing on the shroud? Do you use gaff vangs? Thanks, Thierry

Hi Thierry,

No need. Yes the gaff does bear onto the shrouds a little when on a beam reach, but have your traveller tight and use the width of the sterns to sheet the main tight but out at an angle. As soon as the apparent wind is on the beam or behind, I drop the main, change the peak halyard and raise the main again with the gaff in front of the shrouds. No chafe and sail sets really well!
