Hi folks, I am writing this on Nov 26, 2023

My name is RIchard. I am in the USA, but I am not limited only to purchasing a boat in the USA.

I am looking and maybe shopping for a Wharram. I have found some listings for sale but that sale happened years ago and their listing has not been updated. I have also found listings for Wharrams that are now in estates of owner/owners who have passed on.

Hoping to hear from you soon!

Thanks,
Hello fellow Wharram sailors. I have been on the hard for a couple of years but I am planning to launch early spring. I’m hoping someone can offer a suggestion for a spinnaker for downwind sailing. I’m hoping to find a decent used sail. I’m sure this topic has been discussed before but I don’t see anything. Thank for any info.

Hi would anyone have the drawings for changing the U Bolt to lashings for forestay bridle? Does there need to be extra wood or epoxy in the stem to carry the load as it appears the lashing hole are drilled further back than the ubolt position. Cheers Pat

Hello everyone,

Well, it is now 2023 and my son and I's Tiki 21 project is back on.

This time we would like to know if Birch plywood would be right for this project. We may have a good deal on enough of it to build the entire boat.

I am attaching a screen capture that describe the main qualities of this material.

I’m 2 years in averaging around 20 hours per month. Yes, very part time but still enjoying it. The beams, tillers, hatchs, mast and other small parts are complete. I’m just now fitting the upper panels to the first hull. Building one hull at a time due to space limitations. The upper panels have been the most intimidating so far. Any advice from the Cretan’s out there???

My old 24 foot Henemoa had to be scrapped, but the replacement mast, foresail reefing, wing sail and foresail are available. I LIVE IN Exmouth, Devon, England. There are also a couple of anchors (mud and rock), a Johnstone outboard motor, some fenders and a box of bits. Open to offers (it would be nice to see it on another boat).

The stuff would need to be collected from here, so contact me for photos if you're interested.

Cheers Tony

"I have 1000 board feet of white oak logs sitting in my yard here and we are going to saw them up.
If you have a detailed list we can rough saw to suit and finish plane later."

So my question is this:

Would lumber cut from white oak logs be an acceptable substitute for "...fine grained softwood" in building the boat?

Unless we are told otherwise, we are hoping to take advantage of this generous offer.

If someone knows that this would be a mistake, please let us know.

We'll be checking the forums, or you could email us at:

The Tiki trailer with swing out cradles is well under construction. I've made some structural improvements including additional crossmembers and attaching the A frame and drawbar to the underneath per Aus/NZ trailer standards. Ive also added longitudinal drawbar stiffeners to reduce flex. With all material being 5mm steel I think it's a bit of an overkill but considering it could theoretically take a T30 then I'm glad it's extra strong. Suspension is all rated to 1500kg and has disc brakes connected to a hydraulic over ride coupling. Coupling is rated to 3500kg per local regs.
I'll ensure some details !Ike hinges are photographed as that might help someone else.
Cost so far is a little over AUD$2000. I still have to buy a beefier jockey wheel which was an oversight.
For the sake of interest, I know the owner of an engineering shop locally. I showed him the plans and he said there would be no change from AUD$10,000 to commission him to build the trailer.
I hope this helps others contemplating building these trailers. It's a very straight forward build but it does help to have a son who is a real welder.
apprentice position offered on 48ft custom catamaran in Floridatag:wharrambuilders.ning.com,2020-08-30:2195841:BlogPost:1739022020-08-30T22:34:41.000Zdennis schneiderhttp://wharrambuilders.ning.com/profile/dennisschneider

You will learn: 1) designing a live-aboard catamaran for very little money. 2) safe use of fiberglass, epoxy, polyurethane adhesives, caulks, expanding foam; 3) marine woodworking alternatives to marine ply; 4) sanding, grinding, drilling, welding, fastening wood, metal, composites; 5) diesel and gas propulsion units; 6) mast and sail parameters - standing and running rigging; 7) 5 anchor types, rodes/ windlasses, bridles; 8)electrical systems and motors, marine wiring (voltage drop!); 9)kick-up rudders. cassettes, centerboards (fluid dynamics!); 10) techniques to stop leaks and reinforce hulls; 11) studying the relevant print and digital literature; 12) learning to think like an engineer. and much more. The successful applicant will have quarters on board, get 3 meals/day, use of facilities inhouse, receive a stipend of $200/wk, and be expected to assist me in whatever way furthers his/her skill level enhancement full-time. I am looking for someone who hasnt yet been subjected to the duties and responsibilities of modern life - i.e., still has his/her options open for the projected training period of at least one year. I can make myself understood in several languages, so English fluency is not essential. Dedication and safety are paramount to me...

Unfortunately the masts are un-stayed and free-standing.

The challenge was that the mast would have to be lifted vertically , then rotated to access the mast tip .

After debating using a very long tripod , I instead constructed a lifting rig to do the job.

Two 6 foot pine studs were set upright at 8 inch spacing and braced to horizontal arms around 5 feet long. A 3:1 trailer winch was then set below a roller secured to the top of the uprights . A 10 foot aluminium tube with a rope running through its centre provided the athwart ship bracing .

The 120 lb tapered aluminium mast was raised the 5 foot or so to just clear the deck . A camel hitch was then used to secure a tackle 9 inches from the mast base . The 3:1 tackle was used so that the mast tip could be reached at beach level.

After two days of stress and effort , I now have dreams regarding marinas and cranes !

Hi, my name is Paul and I live in Sydney, Australia. I'm planning on building a Tiki 30 in Sydney starting December this year. Will buy the hard copy plans ASAP and start planning/preparing.

Hi, my name is Paul and I live in Sydney, Australia. I'm planning on building a Tiki 30 in Sydney starting December this year. Will buy the hard copy plans ASAP and start planning/preparing.

I'm handy (but not a carpenter) and have only been sailing for 5 years (off and on). Overall my understanding of yachts and sailing is limited but I'm still going to do this. I will have some 2-5 other persons helping me to build it.

What I'm looking for is:

Connecting with anyone who has built and sailed a Tiki 21>38 from scratch.

Upfront honest advice on what to look out for before starting and during the build

If you have built a Tiki and had to do it again, what would you do differently and why?

I like the Wharram catamaran concept as it's a project and it seems, within reason, you can customise a good number of aspects of the boat.

The Tiki 30 I will build is for long term living on (will retire inside 5 years and cruise). Not looking for a mega luxury boat, just a simple/stylish boat that I can live on with one other person (I'm downsizing and looking to live a simpler and minimalistic lifestyle). Want it for coastal cruising in Australia and also open ocean passages in the Pacific/Indian oceans.

My email is paullister64@gmail.com if you wish to get in contact and start a conversation.

Thank you and go well.
