Hi Rob- yep that was the Catalinas. I think that you are the same person that gave me a lovely afternoon sail off Gantheume Point with a friend Greg Wood during the embryonic stage of my Wharram fixation. Look what happened!
Yes, Broome is a bit tough to be a boat owner- you need a jinker to take the boat out of the water for the cyclone season (cranes a hellishly expensive so a jinker is worthwhile). There is no charge from the port to store a boat on the hard. Moorings are about $1500 per year to rent or $8-10k to install with annual survey costs of a few hundred dollars.
I don't know those boats that you mention but we did have a great time sailing Jigal back from Sumatra so don't be put off by the distance.
