"I shall post newer pics soon, since the mast is up, deck pod/galley built and operational and all decks fitted. As for the sloping decks, there should be no need to walk on the decks as everything happens between the hulls. The forward and stern…"
"@ Lawrence: I took a peek at the photos now. In understand that a.) the hulls are widened by a couple inches above the waterline, the decks are sloped outside, probably to shake off water if you hit a wave (make sure you have a nice, tough…"
"Hi Mike - yes, horses for courses as they say. I do agree with everything you say, but when I need good deck access at both bow and stern, my solution works. If I ever plan to go ocean sailing I might re-think, but that is not going to happen in…"
"That is correct, Andy, but not the idea of a Pahi. The important features of a Pahi´s steering are: A rudder that can be removed through the rudder well and repaired omn deck in the middle of an ocean, if need be (Maybe a tribute to Jim…"
"Gee, I never thought of this. I will investigate this with interest because it would solve some access problems I have as the result of fitting flush decks over all the "deckboxes" that are hung between the beams. I have also avoided…"
"Yes, it is simple and clean - which I appreciate ;-) You are correct, cable is inside thick sleeve, well greased. From what I understand many other catamarans use this type of setup as they often don't have the link bar between tillers (in fact…"
"Hi - Mike, great pictures of a great looking boat! Setup looks very good, even though I use a different approach at the moment I do believe in the Wharram KISS philosophy! Here are some photos from a few years ago to give an idea of how my system…"
"Hmm, food for thought. My "Wharram" is inspired by the ideas and concepts rather than being a true Wharram. It is made of Epoxy/Glass and stryrofoam and fibreglass rather than plywood because we have huge problems with insect,…"
"Wharram defines three turns of rope each direction, six in all, and it is about five turns lock to lock, but do I understand correctly that you do not have the original plan at hand? Because this includes a plan sheet describing Wharrams approach…"
"Wow its Really simple and straight forward. I was planning to make it more complicated than it needs to be. My boat has been assembled from parts that have been discarded by other vessels. For example I have an aluminium steering…"
"O.K., Lawrence. Here we go. An explanation first: These pics were made when I repaired my then 15 years old Pahi in St. Lucia, preparing to take her back across the North Atlantic. She had caught termites in Grenada, and I had to rebuild the whole…"
"Yes, you are right that it does need to be checked over now and again. As we sail in the Baltic the salt level is fairy low, but of course there is still some corrosion possibility. It is easy to disconnect - one bolt attaches cable to tiller, but…"
"Sounds cool, Andy, and saves lots of hassle - as long as the thing doesn´t catch to much salt and corrode, and as long as you are able to diconnect it quickly without having to fumble around with tools in exposed locations."
"Hi - I have used a different approach, completely un-Wharram I am afraid! I use a heavy duty Ultraflex steering cable system (as used for outboard motor boats). I have a twin cable system, so a single cable goes to each rudder. Theoretically I…"
We are John and Kat from Australia, members of the PCA and we are building a 42' Pahi due to launch in about a year. We will be in Cape Town on 4/5 February and Durban on 7th February. If you are going to be in the area and would be happy to meet with us to discuss Wharram building and owning, we would enjoy it very much. Please let us know as soon as possible.
John and Kat
we are sailing from New York to Sydney on the Queen Mary 2 and are now looking at hiring a car in durban at 8am when we dock and driving up to Richards Bay for the day. we have to be back on the QM by 5pm but that still leaves a few hours at the Zululand Yacht Club with you and any other wharramers who are willing to meet us :) we'll contact you closer to the date but are really looking forward to swapping Pahi building stories and seeing where you are up to with yours. we'll bring photos of ours. cheers J&K
